Wednesay departue happened on schedule but was not without problems. First off, I only got about 5 miles away from the hut before I realized the FIRST thing I forgot...my money. Yeah, I wouldn't have gotten too far without that. No worries...plenty of time.
After grabbing my loot stack I hit 85 north and immediately realized there was a gigantic annoying headwind chipping away at my gas mileage. There was some kind of storm coming in off the east coast and the wind was blowing south. The whole way I thought I was waaaaay into the gas pedal compared to mow I usually drive, just to stay up to speed.
Reached Greenville right on time, and immediately started drinking beertrons while catching up with what has been going on in Erics life. We chit chatted for a bit, then headed of to
Upcountry History Museum to check out a show called "Comic Stripped: A revealing look at Southern Stereotypes in Cartoons". The museum was mostly static displays about upcountry South Carolina history, and only the room with the comics hosts changing exhibitions.
> The exhibit was pretty cool. A lot of vintage comic books and garage calanders. There were some interactive parts where you were encouraged to leave a post it note with your opinion on various subjects...I filled out a buncjh of those inna readable graffiti style font. Thats as close as I get to tagging public places (unless I am really drunk...best to put your sharpies away then...)
There were some pretty shocking racist portions of the exhibit...a lot of comments on the wall next to this one
I was pretty stoked about the moonshine still on display
We thought this one was pretty funny...
Eric decided to try and get in on the action
Since we were there we checked out the static displays, but the only interesting one was the textile machinery...I can't imagine the sound this contraption makes, let alone a factory with a few hundred of them
After the exhibit we headed over to
Titos Pizza to absorb pie. There is this whole scandalous story about Titos war with some other pizza joint just down the road involving ex-employees defecting to the new place and all sorts of other pie drama. Titos is just a standard hole in the wall pizza joint, nothing special. I hate -fancy- pizza. The closer you can get it to some regular northeast style slices, the better I like it. Titos gets in closer than Fellinis or Grant Central by miles. You can keep your fancy pizza, we go for the classic.
We kept the beer consumption ratio high at Titos, then headed over to X-Records, which is a record store eric had heard about, but hadn't been able to locate. This place was a dustbin goldmine. A zillion slabs of late 80s to mid 90s dance music in great condition, plus a buttload of swing, easy listening and space age bachelor pad bizness. The place was a crate diggers paradize. They had a "dollar room", in which I found a cherry copy of Mystic Moods Orchestra "One Stormy Night", which is a hard to find easy-listening gem.
I buy Mystic Moods Orchestra recs mainly for the cover art. I'm not going to lie, sometime I actually put an easy listening record on and for forty minutes I exist on pillows of strings in an elevator fantasy-land. Mainly though, I buy ones I know are worth loot because I read a great book on Muzak, which talked about a bunch of specific slabs that are hard to find and worth loot. I paid a dollar for the Mystic Moods, the lowest we found it on
gemm for was 12$. I'm going to hit X-records again on the way back and make a killing...
Next up we hit the public putt-putt course. I think its kind of rad that there is free putt putt in Greenville. There aren't any cool motorized windmills or anything like that, but there are challenging holes and lots of people on dates. I lost by three strokes, but I played well off the boards.
We headed back to Erics hut for more beers and to check out the 68 Mustang he is building with his dad. Its coming along really well! Check out the big block 351 with electronic ignition, gigantic Holley 4 barrel, and a slew of other aftermarket goods.
Sa-weeeeeet innit? That car is going to FLY!
The rest of the evening was pretty chill. Just some boob toob and then I turned in early to get a good start for the lengthy drive the next day.
Big Ups Eric and Family for the wicked hospitality! I'll see ya on the way back through.
