Inked

Dear Miss Lockhart:

I must say that last night had indeed gone well. Of course, I do not find it in my place to express such opinions as it was I who had invited you to dinner. However, seeing that the evening had not ended in hostility or disagreement, I had assumed that you had felt the same. Once more, it should not be my place to make such assumptions.

In any case, to put it simply and bluntly, I had a pleasant time. I found your company quite different from others and it would be an honor if we could do it again some other time. After saying all that, I would like to thank you for your time and patience.

Sincerely yours,

Rufus J. Shinra Jr.

PS. I do hope that I did not cause any trouble between you and Cloud Strife. And if there ever was, I would like to express my utmost apologies for the inconvenience.

A dark eyebrow rose as Tifa Lockhart read and reread the letter in her hands, leaning back against the counter, a shadow of an amused smirk lingering on her lips.

It was not a love letter. That, she was sure of. There were no cheesy lines or weird poems for one thing. Of course, the man aimed to flatter her so it was no surprising that he used a number of flowery words. There wasn't any expression of love either and the 'I found your company quite different' didn't count as one. And lastly, it was too formal and sounded too logical, too pragmatic to be one.

It wasn't a business letter either. The man just asked her out through a letter, for the love of Holy, despite the gold-lined ivory parchment with the ShinRa Corporation logo for its header and the elegant writing in dark blue ink. Not to mention his 'I'm-better-than-you' signature. And he was asking politely, so politely even for someone like Rufus Shinra, that it almost seemed like he was instead asking her father for her hand in marriage.

She snorted inwardly at the thought. He'd probably hang himself first. Still, It was either not a love letter or Rufus merely sucked in writing one.

Her smirk widened and a good-natured laughter bubbled from her at the post script, earning an inquiring glance from the a blond from across the bar. The same blond mentioned on the letter. It sounded more sarcastic than anything, almost condescending. And Tifa wondered if Rufus was indeed sincere when he wrote it.

"Tifa?" Cloud was now frowning at her. "What's that?"

Tifa folded the paper and slipped it in her pocket. "A letter. A love letter."

A pale eyebrow rose. The mild expression on Cloud's face was unmistakable. "From whom?"

"Rufus Shinra."

"W-What?"

Tifa merely laughed.
