Below is a list of my favorite movies set in France:
TOP FAVORITE MOVIES SET IN FRANCE
1. "Camille" (1936) - Considered to be Greta Garbo's finest movie, this version of Alexandre Dumas fils's 1848 novel about a Parisian courtesan was directed by George Cukor and co-starred Robert Taylor. Superb movie.
2. "Dangerous Liaisons" (1988) - Stephen Frears directed - in my opinion - the best cinematic adaptation of Pierre Choderlos de Laclos' 1792 novel, "Les Liaisons dangereuses". Glenn Close, John Malkovich and Michelle Pfieffer starred in this Academy Award nominated movie.
3. "Gigi" (1958) - Considered the last of MGM's musical classics, this movie adaptation of Colette's 1944 novella and the 1951 Broadway play starred Leslie Caron, Louis Jordan, Hermione Gingold and Maurice Chevalier. Vincente Minelli directed this sumptuous nine-times Academy Awards winner.
4. "The Bourne Identity" (2002) - Matt Damon and Franka Potente starred in this second cinematic adaptation of Robert Ludlum's 1980 spy novel about an amnesiac man involved with espionage. Doug Liman directed.
5. "The Three Musketeers" (1973) - Richard Lester directed this excellent adaptation of the first half of Alexandre Dumas père's 1844 adventure novel. Michael York, Oliver Reed, Faye Dunaway and Raquel Welch led the movie's fabulous cast.
6. "The Day of the Jackal" (1973) - Edward Fox starred in this excellent adaptation of Frederick Forsyth's 1971 novel about an assassin hired to kill President Charles de Gaulle. Directed by Fred Zimmerman, the movie co-starred Michel Lonsdale and Alan Badel.
7. "The Count of Monte Cristo" (2002) - James Caviezel, Dagmara Dominczyk and Guy Pearce starred in my favorite adaptation of Alexandre Dumas père's 1844-1846 novel. The movie was directed by Kevin Reynolds.
8. "All This and Heave Too" (1940) - Bette Davis and Charles Boyer starred in this excellent version of Rachel Fields' 1938 novel about a governess' impact upon a French aristocratic family in the mid-19th century. Anatole Litvak directed.
9. "The Four Musketeers: Milday's Revenge" (1974) - Richard Lester directed this excellent adaptation of the second half of Alexandre Dumas père's 1844 adventure novel. Michael York, Oliver Reed, Faye Dunaway and Raquel Welch led the sequel's fabulous cast.
10. "Ronin" (1998) - Robert De Niro starred in this exciting action thriller about a group of former special operatives, hired to steal a heavily guarded suitcase. Directed by John Frankenheimer, the movie co-starred Jean Reno and Natascha McElhone.
