Below is a list of my favorite movies directed by Hollywood legend, William Wyler:

TOP FAVORITE WILLIAM WYLER MOVIES



1. "The Heiress" (1949) - Olivia de Havilland won a Best Actress Oscar in this brilliant adaptation of Ruth and Augustus Goetz's 1947 Broadway play, which was an adaptation of Henry James' 1880 novella, "Washington Square". Montgomery Cliff, Oscar nominee Ralph Richardson and Miriam Hopkins co-starred.



2. "The Letter" (1940) - Bette Davis earned an Oscar nomination (should have won) for her portrayal of a murderess in this excellent adaptation of W. Somerset Maugham's 1927 stage play. Oscar nominee James Stephenson, Gale Sondergaard and Herbert Marshall co-starred.



3. "The Big Country" (1958) - Gregory Peck starred in this entertaining adaptation of Donald Hamilton's 1958 novel, "Ambush at Blanco Canyon". Jean Simmons, Carroll Baker, and Charlton Heston co-starred.



4. "The Best Years of Our Lives" (1946) - Wyler won his second Best Director Oscar for this superb look at veterans returning home from World War II. Oscar winners Fredric March and Harold Russell, along with Dana Andrews starred.



5. "Friendly Persuasion" (1956) - Gary Cooper and Dorothy Maguire starred in this excellent adaptation of Jessamyn West's 1945 novel about a pacifist Quaker family from Southern Indiana during the Civil War.



6. "Wuthering Heights" (1939) - Oscar nominee Laurence Olivier and Merle Oberon starred in this emotional adaptation of Emily Brontë's 1847 novel about star-crossed lovers. David Niven and Flora Robson co-starred.



7. "Roman Holiday" (1953) - Gregory Peck and Oscar winner Audrey Hepburn starred in this delightful romantic comedy and an American reporter and a princess enjoying a day in Rome. Eddie Albert co-starred.



8. "Hell’s Heroes" (1929-30) - Charles Bickford, Raymond Hatton, and Fred Kohler starred in this gripping fourth adaptation (and first sound version) of Peter B. Kyne's 1915 novel about three outlaws who take care of a newborn baby after the mother's death.



9. "Jezebel" (1938) - Bette Davis won a Best Actress Oscar for her portrayal of a willful Southern belle in antebellum Louisiana in this adaptation of Owen Davis' 1933 Broadway play. Henry Fonda, Best Supporting Actress Oscar winner Fay Bainter and George Brent co-starred.



10. "Counsellor-at-Law" (1933) - John Barrymore starred in this interesting adaptation of Elmer Rice's 1931 stage play about the few days in the life of a successful Manhattan attorney. Bebe Daniels and Doris Kenyon co-starred.
