Apparently, they seem to want only archetypes.
It surely seems that way, at least the vocal type of fan. I hadn't a problem with seeing Padme as a whole, rounded character throughout the trilogy with her death appearing reasonably portrayed.

Ha, it helps that I see few films! I walked out of Ep. III in 2005 with 3 15 year olds (whose moral development I'm eagerly following) and they said as I eavesdropped, "You know, Anakin was sort of all right up to the point where he killed kids." Honestly, they bought the 'dying of a broken heart' theme and I did, too. She was just wiped out in all ways and succumbed.

I told them that Anakin surprised me by being written as a wifebeater.

When you mean that Anakin was a "wife beater", you are referring to that one instance when he choked Padme. Right?

I was, because the situation escalated as it does in RL from verbal to physical abuse. Naturally, the film's running time deemed this take place over some minutes rather than weeks or months.

Also, in AOTC's meadow picnic scene, that development seemed foreshadowed (along with the fall to the dark side) during their conversation. Padme: "That sounds like a dictatorship to me." Anakin: "Well, if it works ... " and then Anakin breaks into a smile after a beat, though the moment was established that yes, he thought putting the will of one person over the will of another, or many others, was a good deal.

I'm sorry, but could you explain what you meant?

Sure! Abuse that turns physical begins verbal: "You're not keeping the house up right," or "Why did you wear that hideous dress?" to "You're keeping things from me!" and "Where did you hide the X in the refrigerator?" to "You're seeing someone else!!" *smack* *punch*

In ROTS on Mustafar, Anakin goes through Stages One and Two swiftly and then when Obi-Wan shows up, he shoots directly to Stage Three: Nuclear Meltdown.

When you mentioned abuse, I thought you were claiming that Anakin had been subjecting Padme for a period of time. Yet, it sounds as if one single moment in which Anakin's temper and jealousy got the best of him and he resorted to violence.

It would be nice to think that Padme's bright character wouldn't stand for extended treatment like that; there's the thought that some very bright, talented folks in RL endure a lot in the hope that change will occur. In the film, we see just a smidgen of bad treatment, awful and final though it is.

I like to think of the pair being happy for quite some time before the meltdown. The Clone Wars TV show depicted that at various episodes. Darn, I miss that show! :S
