I hope I can explain it enough... maybe a few more pictures help^^
when you have your gradient layer, to add a vector mask just click this
(it's at the bottom of the layer window), make sure the mask is selected (it should have a blue border around it), floodfill it with black - now it should look like this:

Next, take the polygon lasso tool and select a stripe,
for example:

make sure the mask is still selected and the background color is white (should look like this:
), now you can hit del and there should be your first stripe^^
