One of the places I applied to awhile ago has asked me to interview, which is great! Unfortunately, it's in Whitehorse, which means I either need to find ~$1000 for flights (plus extra for a place to stay, I guess), or take 5 days off work to drive there. Could you talk to them about the possibility of doing a phone interview, making it clear that you are very interested in the job but are concerned about travel/taking time off from your current job? That would show that you care about what they're doing but you feel responsible to where you're working now-something they may interpret as being positive.

If this is the government job I told you about, the Yukon Government does interviews strictly on a points basis. You get points for answering questions correctly, and the person with the most points gets the job. Unless you're concerned that you won't be able to give good answers without seeing your interviewers in person, don't worry about being disadvantaged by doing a phone interview. They won't dock points for that reason alone, and I'm sure they'll totally understand if you can't afford to make the trek in person.
