I saw it this morning and have to admit that I went there prepared to hate it.

I loved it. )

Spoilers!!!

I was sure you would freak at the Uhuru/Spock thing. I thought it was sexy in the elevator, her responding to his grief, but it went overboard on the teleportation pad.

OK. people, I liked the film too. I have nitpicks about pulling together all the crew despite the age differences, Kirk being able to drive shift and Spock marooning Kirk on a planet instead of putting him in the brig, just so the writers could have him meet up with Prime Spock and Scotty. My greater nitpicks would be bypassing Kirk's original posting and his eventually being given a Captaincy at an even younger age than in the original series and BUILDING STARSHIPS DOWN ON THE EARTH! Both stretched plausibility. That said, Kirk acted like Kirk, Spock acted like Spock and McCoy, he was perfect down to his divorce.

Some of the changes due to Nero's interference with time were sad as was Spock's mother, Amanda being killed, but most of the changes were reasonable.

I thought that Zachary Quinto was right on the pointy ears with his portrayal of Spock. I missed the deep voice, but even Leonard Nimoy's voice wasn't so resonant the first time he played Spock in the first pilot. I also really enjoyed Leonard Nimoy's performance. He still has it.

I, like Sela, thought that Chris Pine might ruin it for me, especially after he said he modeled himself for the role after Harrison Ford. (Yeah, and I'll buy that Brooklyn Bridge from you, too Chris.) Chris Pine was doing Kirk all the way. Remember Kirk's trademark stare, face tilted down, eyes up with the keylights in the eyes? It's in there. Remember the trademark hands on the hips stance? It's in there. Pine's Kirk was so right on the mark that sometimes his non-Shatner voice would startle me when he spoke. His voice sometimes sounds exactly like Christian Slater! Still, he could be the original Kirk's tall, blue-eyed twin.

By The way, did anyone notice that Christopher Pine's name is one letter away from a famous Star Trek character who is also in the movie, Captain Christopher Pike? I know, I'm a Trekker, OK Trekkie from way back and it shows.

As for other characters, I loved Karl Urban, previously known from "Xena", "Hercules" and "Lord of the Rings", and his portrayal of McCoy. I love it even more because he is and sounds nothing like McCoy in real life. Simon Pegg as Scotty, I'd give another "meh". Paul McGillion would have been better. Zoe Saldana as Uhura didn't have the allure of Nichelle Nichols, but she was OK. John Cho was OK as Sulu. A. Yelchin overacted his accent as Checkov and the role lacked the humor it had in the series, but mostly I object to a 17 year old helming a star ship. I KNOW how badly most 17 year old boys drive! Bruce Greenwood was fine as Pike. Seeing him at the end in a wheelchair was creepy, though. Finally, Eric Bana's performance as Nero, the villain was OK, but not in Khan territory.

Like Sela, I like the sets and special effects. They were gorgeous, if a bit busy, but I was pleased that the Enterprise still looked like the Enterprise and that the crew's uniforms and haircuts were true to the series. There were even women with those goofy hairstyles from the 60s!

Also, like Sela, I wasn't so pleased with the Romulans' ship and make-up. The ears were good though.

Overall, I thought the film was a lot of fun, and I have a feeling that I'll like it even more on my second viewing. I'll be over my nitpicks by then. What I won't get over is that I'm older than Kirk now. *sigh*
