Three days felt very much like three years. He was sure that he'd worn a hole in the carpet from pacing. He'd taken perhaps more than his share of sleeping potions and had been forced to see a healer to have some breaks in his hand mended. Of course the moment that the owl had came he felt like he'd not had enough time and was back to panicking.
Still, he headed to the hotel ready to face his wife with the news. Of course that was after a good hour of primping to try and look respectable. To the outside world he wanted it to look like nothing was wrong. He was quite pleased with the effect, his suit looked expensive and pristine, and nothing like the father of small children. More like a business man from a respected family, his parents would be pleased.
He wasn't sure if Selene would be able to read on his face the answer, Part of him hoped that she could. He wasn't sure he could put the results in to words. Not with his hands shaking and voice trapped in his sore throat. Still as his parents had drilled into him for as long as he could remember, Put on a good show.
Her head shot up as soon as the door squeaked open. Her blue eyes raking over him almost instantly out of habit. He looked...different. A bundle of nerves on one hand, maybe even guilt, but dressed to the nines; reminiscent of his father.
Selene herself was a little more casually. In jeans, nude heels and a blue and cream striped shirt; a matching denim trench completed the look and ended at her hip.
"...You sound like you've seen a ghost." Her tone was quite but not icy like before.
"An Angel perhaps" he offered, she always looked perfect to him. Which of cause made the guilt even heavier in the pit of his stomach. "Hows Eva?" he asked softly stepping in and shutting the door behind him. Tucking his hands in his pockets to stop them from shaking.
"She misses you." That first night, she wouldn't stop calling for him once they'd gotten to the hotel. The sound had very nearly broken her heart. "Senses that I do too, I guess."
He gave a smile that was clearly a mask of one. He couldn't give a genuine smile right now if he wanted too. "Being with out you, it's- it's a very empty feeling" he whispered more to himself than to her. In part because he feared it would become a regular state. "Who's Eva with?"
Selene merely nodded. Like him, she had felt an emptiness over the past few days. More than that though, she had cried -a lot. Hurt, betrayal, anger and worry all constants in her mind. What would happen now; how would things change?
He nodded, although it felt empty. He didn't really feel any connection to most of her family, or friends if he was honest. They were hers, usually it didn't bother him but today it did. He should have made more of an effort to connect.
The blonde sighed, a hand coming to rest over her stomach. Did they really come here for small talk? It wouldn't make the resulting fallout any easier.
Biting the bludger she muttered, eyes downcast. "So you know, then? If the boy's...have you already looked?"
For a moment the blonde didn't breathe, sure if she looked at him her face would mirror that of a slapped person. Then, rather quickly, the tears came.
Selene didn't sob or scream, just allowed the tears to come streaming out and encircled her babies with her arms. This was the outcome she never wanted, yet knew would likely happen. Ducking her head -largely in an attempt to hide behind her hair- she just continued to cry and let it sink in.
His words if possible, almost made it worse. Even while everyone else doubted, was willing to punish him for her, Selene wanted to believe his remorse was genuine. If it truly was...she wasn't honestly sure.
Sniffing, she tried to sober herself and took measured breaths. "No," she finally answered with bite, her red-rimmed eyes meeting his. "I want the truth. Do you honestly not remember it?"
Her asking, it was like a knife to his heart. That she didn't believe him. "If I did, I would have told you when we reunited after the separation... I told you about the partying, about the flirting. The guilt- it was-" he stared down at the ground trying to level his breathing, to keep calm. "I would have told you."
And with that, even though everyone told her not too, Selene accepted it as the truth. They'd been together too long, had children together; she knew her husband.
"I'm sorry, I know." Her eyes shimmered again as she looked at him. "But we were in such a different place then. Between all of that and your brother hanging around...the idea that I pushed you that far away...I..."
He wasn't sure that he could ever put into words how relieved he was that she believed him. It was the truth, but that didn't mean that she had to believe it. He wanted to thank her, to put how much he loved her into words and tell her that he would always be at her side, but nothing came out. Instead a soft breathless sob escaped him.
Tears filled her eyes again at that sob and she moved to her feet. Not toward him surprisingly, but the fire place, using it to keep herself upright and added softly.
"...I just keep thinking if I hadn't...hadn't lost the first baby. None of this would've happened."
