Title:  In Lieu of Kindness
Notes:  Original characters belong to Zephuu.
Summary:  The bruises we leave on each other all fade away, but the changes we make are the steps we take towards the future.

Chapter Three: Interlude .

"What do you believe in?"

(He is not startled; this question has been brewing in her eyes for days, flitting from the corner of her glances and the surreptitious touches of her hands, pausing over passages and tapping against lines of her book.  But he is - a little bit at least.  Semyon half thought she would never find the courage for her words.)

"Myself."

(Alessa on the other hand is not surprised at all.  She already knows his answer before she asks.  Why voice the sounds then - the syllables waiting upon the tip of her tongue?  Things spoken have power and they both need to hear this; now and here, they both need to hear this.)

"Why the skepticism, Semyon?"

Because I am here.

"Why do you believe?"

Because you are here.

"You will understand one day."

(One of them does not believe this, but he is uncertain.  The other, however, has an odd faith that things will work out.  They are all of them God's children and he was sent to her as much as she was sent to him.)
