I am taking another little break after a full day of walking around Rome. Two observations:
1) The Sistine Chapel is really awesome, but I couldn't help being slightly more impressed by the trompe l'oeil tapestries on the wall at "ground level." They look like real tapestries! with embroidery, and pretty folds with light shining on them, and they're all different. It's really impressive.
2) St. Peter's Basilica is really, really friggin big. Like I have never seen a larger monument to an arguably pointless thing. I say this with some hesitation, because it is also absolutely gorgeous, and even the statues of babies look like they would eat my head as a snack. But you could house a lot of homeless people inside. Or you could melt down all that gold, and pay for medication for like all the AIDS patients in Africa. That would be a nice Christian thing to do...
