Unexpected visit

Nov 29, 2006 17:31

Our recent visit to the slayer had undoubtedly been a success. She believed Lindsey and I were going to save her, and maybe we were, just not the way she was expecting. Adding the part about Angel's soul had been an exceptionally nice touch on Lindsey's part. After all, if we were there to hurt her then why would we be so concerned for Angel and ( Read more... )

"It's Lilah. Would you mind stopping by my office, say...now. There's someone here I think your gonna wanna see."

I wondered if Lilah had found something pertinent that we could use against Buffy. I hadn't been working on that since we left. I had been reading about some interesting things that one of our clients had done and defending this particular client was not going to be your typical hatchet, bullshit defense.

"I think you know why I'm here. I know what you and Lindsey have been up to recently."

I had rushed to her office because I had sensed a little fear in her voice. It wasn't something common in Lilah that I knew of, recently anyway, and since we were the ones in charge, I was thinking of one name.

I heard his question to her just outside of the door and then made myself comfortable inside of her office.

"Once Lindsey gets here, we're all going to have a nice little chat."

"Wow, it sounds like you actually have something important to say, Angel. What could this be?"

I grabbed a chair from near the corner and made myself comfortable opposite of him at Lilah's desk.

I relaxed a bit once Lindsey got to my office, but not much. Angel was unpredictable not to mention dangerous and obviously pissed off about something we had done. Not that we hadn't done plenty for his to be upset about, it was just a matter now of finding out which thing in particular he was talking about.

I leaned back in my chair, twirling my pen around in my finger and smiled. "Well," I spread my hands out and glanced over at Lindsey, "looks like you have our attention. Mind telling us why you broke in this time?"

The thought that he was here because of our recent visit to Buffy barely even crossed my mind. After all, there was no possible way he could haven known about that. It wasn't like we had sent out flyer's yet or anything...that would come later.

"Good, I'm glad you're both here." I got up and started to walk a bit. "The both of you have done something that once again has pushed a major button with me. You two are very good at that. Then again, pushing buttons is what you get paid for."

I stopped, turning to look at them. "Funny, I should be used to this by now, but no, you keep find new and innovative ways to piss me off."

I walked closer to them until I was right in front of them, towering over them both as they sat in their chairs. "I know you went and visited Buffy, where ever she is, and also told her lies about me. Made her think the two of you were her friends."

I leaned in, getting into their faces as I spoke again. "Now you know what happens when you make me angry. And this, this makes me very. VERY. Angry."

I then sat on the desk again, picking up a paperweight and playing with it as I looked at them. "So, you're going to tell me how you contacted her, and then, if you're really smart, you're going to back off and never contact her again."

I paused one more time, crushed the paperweight in my hands, then let the now tiny pieces fall to the ground. "Or you could be stupid and there will be consequences. Your choice."

"looks like you have our attention. Mind telling us why you broke in this time?"

Lilah still hadn't learned. I shook my head. Angel wasn't going to kill us. Sure, he'd kill a hundred demons, but regardless of what we did, he wouldn't kill us, we were human. Even if he said, like he had in the past, that we didn't qualify as humans, he wouldn't kill us.

Hell, if he were going to kill us, then he would have done it after we raised Lilah, and he didn't then and wouldn't now. Although, I did wonder about my other hand...

"The both of you have done something that once again has pushed a major button with me. You two are very good at that. Then again, pushing buttons is what you get paid for."

I smirked. What a chump.

"Funny, I should be used to this by now, but no, you keep find new and innovative ways to piss me off."

I looked right into his eyes as if he were crazy.

"Honestly, Angel, as much as I would love to have done something to piss you off, I have no idea what you are talking about...?"

I looked at Lilah. "Do you have the slightest idea of what he's talking about?"

He couldn't know about Buffy. That would be impossible.

"I know you went and visited Buffy, where ever she is, and also told her lies about me. Made her think the two of you were her friends."

I really really wanted to know how the hell he knew that, but most importantly, we had to pretend as though we hadn't, because we still had access to her and he didn't.

"Now you know what happens when you make me angry. And this, this makes me very. VERY. Angry."

I couldn't contain the grin on my face. "I'm afraid that I do know of Buffy by reputation, back when we did contact another slayer to eliminate you, which unfortunately, she didn't do, but outside of that, I have to claim ignorance, Angel, which is something that you do so well, when it comes to contacting Buffy. Where is she, anyway?"

Policy be damned. I was tired of this back and forth game and his meaningless threats.

"So, you're going to tell me how you contacted her, and then, if you're really smart, you're going to back off and never contact her again."

"Well, Angel, I'm afraid we're not going to be able to tell you. We don't know what you are talking about and besides, your threats are kind of on the empty side."

If I had a stake on me, I would have ended him right now, or tried to.

"Or you could be stupid and there will be consequences. Your choice."

"Consequences, Angel? Threatening senior members of the board at Wolfram and Hart is serious. Do you wnat consequences? I can make it so that you don't leave this building alive, policy about you be damned..."

"Honestly, Angel, as much as I would love to have done something to piss you off, I have no idea what you are talking about...? Do you have the slightest idea of what he's talking about?" Lindsey asked.

I shook my head.

"I know you went and visited Buffy, where ever she is, and also told her lies about me. Made her think the two of you were her friends."

How Angel knew about our visit to Buffy, and so soon, was remarkable. Upsetting, but remarkable. Was there anything this guy couldn't find out before we decided we wanted him to know about it? I mean come on, he was ruining all the well designed fun.

Idle threats were Angel's next plan of attack. It was usually the only one he had and to be honest it was getting a bit, tiring. Lindsey gave him some crap about threatening Wolfram and Hart senior members and how the plan to keep him alive for the up coming apocalypse, "be damned" -his words not mine- that Angel didn't seem impressed by.

"We'd love to help Angel," I interrupted. "Well, no we wouldn't but the fact of the matter is we have no idea what your talking about. Last our resources knew, your little slayer was do-gooding it up down in Sunnydale. Do you mean to tell us the all noble Angel has misplaced her?" I asked sarcastically.

They weren't going to tell me. I could see that as clearly as they unhesitatingly lied to me. My anger grew, but I tried to keep it contained as much as I could.

It didn't work, though. The next thing I knew, I had them out of their chairs and pinned by the throat against the wall. "This isn't a game, kids. You harm a hair on her head and I will tear you to pieces one by one." I enunciated the one by ones by hitting each of their heads against the wall.

I then threw them to the ground. "You've been warned. And this time, you better pay attention."

I then left. They were of no use to me. I'd have to find my own way to Buffy, and I had no idea where to start. Yeah, I messed that up a bit, but I couldn't help it. When it comes to Buffy...

"This isn't a game, kids. You harm a hair on her head and I will tear you to pieces one by one."

Security was liable to come barreling through the doors, but then, I realized that the Senior Partners would likely accept him killing both of us because that would get him closer, in their eyes, to where they wanted him to be. What a lame idea.

I tried to smile, but when you're having the life choked out of you, it's hard to smile.

"We don't know anything about Buffy. You've..."

I coughed, speaking a problem with the whole lack of oxygen problem.

"You've been warned. And this time, you better pay attention."

I decided to say nothing else and I was thinking that he better kill me, because if he doesn't, then no penny will be spared in killing him. Buffy immediately sprung to mind, but getting her to kill Angel, since she was about the only one that could, would be another matter.

Thoughts started to become a problem with the blood not getting to the brain. I grabbed his arm and squeezed and tried to swing at him as he choked us, but I couldn't reach his face.

Then he just let us go and walked out of the room. This wasn't abot to become a habit.

As fun as this was, lack of air was beginning to become some what of an issue. And, having my head banged up against the wall was definitely going to leave a mark. I could honestly think of better ways to be spending my evening. One of which involved present company and a large pointy wooden object.

"You've been warned. And this time, you better pay attention."

Right, sure thing champ, anything you say. Like that was gonna happen any time soon. The fact that Angel was pissed off in the first place was just to sweet for words and apart from this clenching pain around my neck, I was quite satisfied with the fact we had at the very least accomplished that much today.

Lindsey took a swing at Angel but it was pointless, he let us go anyway....and left.

"Well," I said standing up. "that was, interesting."

I rubbed at the now burning sensation around my neck and looked at Lindsey.

"Think I could get a ride home?"

"Well, that was, interesting."

"That's enough. He's going to be interestingly dust. He's done coming in here pushing us around..."

I was stewing.

"Think I could get a ride home?"

Lilah was playing strong, but she was shaken by Angel and expected him to come at us again in the parking garage.

"Okay, Lilah, I think that I can hook you up with a ride..."

I helped her up, which she didn't seem to like and while helping her up, I touched my probably bruised neck, filled with rage and more then that, I was pissed off.

We took the elevator after collecting our briefcases and locking Lilah's office.

We looked at each other, but didn't say much until we actually got into my Lincoln Navigator, unmolested by Angel as it turned out.

"Lilah, keeping Angel alive at the expense of our own lives is bullshit. He was more serious this time and I think that he might kill us for messing with his precious Buffy, which, unfortunately, the Senior Partners would probably enjoy. We need to take matters into our own hands again, here. I know that the Senior Partners wouldn't appreciate it, but if we can keep it off of the books, then it might never be traced to us. Who's that powerful English vampire that we were talking about last week? Was it Fangdan or something? We could get him to kill Angel and pay him out of our own pockets. It seemed like his dossier proved that he was as strong, if not stronger then Angel. We should contact him from a pay phone, or a hotel phone, where the Partners won't be listening, and while we are on the topic, how the fuck did Angel know about our meeting with Buffy? If he didn't find out about that, then we wouldn't have to worry about our own lives and possibly take measures to protect ourselves."

Now there was a question I wouldn't mind seeing answered myself. Just how the hell did Angel find out about our little trip into Buffy's private hell? This all would have been so more easier if he'd just kept his little bumpy nose out of things until we were ready for him. But no, not Angel. He always had to be right on top of everything we do, and let's not forget...be a constant pain in my ass.

"It doesn't matter now." I said quickly, and it didn't. Angel knew about Buffy and that was that. Right now we had to find a way to save our own asses, again, and Lindsey already seemed to be on the right track to making that happen.

Fangdan, I think that's what his name was. In any case, what did it matter? As long as he was faster, stronger and willing to get rid of our not-so-friendly blood sucking problem, then he was just the man we needed. Vampire against vampire, that sounded fair to me. Fair, I smiled in spite of myself, sense when do I give a rats ass about fairness?

I opened my breif case and pulled out the left over paper work from last week. Thank God my office was the only organized place in my life huh? I slid the paper work across the seat to Lindsey and pointed out the windshield for him to take a left. There was a hotel about forty-five minutes north of here, that would have to do.
