Few Chinese have not heard of the 24 Festive Drums Troupe in Johor Bahru.  But where did they originate from?  Has anyone ever wondered about their origins?

The Concept
In1988, there was an outstanding and visionary music teacher in FoonYewHigh School in Johor Bahru. He was affectionately known to allhisstudents as Teacher Tan (full name Tan Hooi Song).  Together with his friend, Mr Chen Zai Pan, they created the 24 Festive Drum Troupe.Thisidea for 24 drummers was based on the Chinese art of calligraphywherethere are 24 festive solar terms. Each festive solar termwasrepresented by a drum.

The celebration of festivals is a Chineseheritage and denoted by the 24solar terms namely:

Theworld's first Drum Troupe was from Foon Yew High School. In 1988theygave their first public performance in Johor Bahru for the DragonBoatFestival. In 1990, they were invited to perform in Singapore andKualaLumpur. Their popularity grew and many chinese schools started tosetup their own drum troupes. The drum troupe concept alsospreadoverseas, with many countries such as Singapore, Thailand,Indonesia,Taiwan, China and even Ameriaca as well as European countriesfollowingsuit.

There is an old Chinese saying that wherever there iswater, the Chinesewill be there. Similarly now, wherever there is aChinese community, a 24 Festive Drum Troupewill definitelybe there. They are the very essence of Chinese culture, embodying inmusical form the Chinese art of calligraphy. Duringperformance, theystir up their hearers imagination and inspire awe forthe Chineseculture.
