Getting it Right

Fandom: Young Justice
Characters: Superman, Superboy
Summary: if Superboy was a different age, maybe Superman would have got it right the first time.

Puppy Eyes are the worse weapons in the world.

Literally.

Superman wanted to ignore the clone in front of him. He didn’t need a clone. He shouldn’t have to be the one to take responsibility for said clone!

Instead said clone ( ‘it would help to address him properly’, his mind supplied. ‘Conner is a nice name right?’) was looking forlornly up at Superman. His small hand was tightly enclosed around the edge of Superman’s red cape. Roughly around the physical age of eight, he looked like a lost child that wandered into the battle area by mistake.

Giving in, Superman knelt down. “Hey, I’m Superman nice to meet you Superboy.”

The ecstatic look on the boy’s face? Priceless.

-------

“Um.”

“Err.”

“You wouldn’t happen to be me from another dimension would you?”

“No. Clone. Look I know this is awkward, so I’ll just, you know, retire to some small island. Knowing Cadmus track records, I’ll probably suffer clone degeneration within a few months.”

“Wait! Let us help?”

---------------------

As a general rule of thumb, most superheroes civilian’s IDs rarely interacted with each other unless their boundaries overlapped with each other. After all it wasn’t too strange for fellow billionaires Bruce Wayne and Oliver Queen to interact. Nor was it strange Clark Kent to interview said billionaires. Okay so maybe that general rule of thumb wasn’t really right, but bottom line was most superheroes didn’t go seeking Clark Kent when they want to talk to him.

Clark supposed kids were a general exception.

“Kent!” Perry called out as he entered back into the office from his lunch break. “You got a visitor!”

‘A visitor?’ Clark thought to himself. His eyes went wide as he saw exactly who was standing by his desk.

It was Dick.

Dressed as a girl.

Carrying the baby clone.

Words cannot begin to describe how Clark is feeling.

“Um…” Clark began.

“Hi Uncle Clark!” Dick chirped. “Why do you look so surprised? Don’t tell me you already forgot your favorite niece in the world, little old Ran?”

“Err, no of course not Ran,” Clark fumbled. “But why are you here?” No really, why on earth was Dick here? Did Bruce know his ward was all that way out here? On second thought, the answer to that question was probably yes. In fact knowing Bruce, he approved of this.

“Ran” gave an exasperated sigh. “Mom and Dad are fighting again. It isn’t a very healthy environment for my cute adorable baby brother, Conner, now is it?” She dropped Conner into Clark’s hand and left a bag (no doubt filled with clothes and other things) on his desk. “I’m headed back to boarding school soon, so it isn’t like I can take care of him. With Mom and Dad’s fight getting more violent, I don’t want them to forget to feed Conner or something. They really should just divorce already, ugh. It would make life so much easier, but I supposed they’re trying to stay together for me and Conner.”

Ran waved and headed towards the door. “Thanks Uncle Clark! Oh and don’t be surprised if Mom and Dad don’t come back for him a few years!”

“Wait- Ran!”

Too late, she was gone.

“Cute kid,” Lois said. She tickled Conner’s stomach. He giggled and gurgled. “Is he yours?”

“For now, I guess.”
