At the age of 3 years 2 months, Preston is down with Hand, Foot & Mouth Disease (HFMD) again!
Episode 1 took place when he was merely 10 months old (Sept 2009) and that was a bad episode cos he got warded in KKH. He was also hooked up to an IV drip after refusing any fluids & food for close to 24 hours and that "staycation" lasted 3 nights. *shudder*
2 weeks ago, his school issued all parents a note about HFMD and cited that there had been 2 cases reported. Last Thursday, 2 kids were sent home during the morning checks when spots were found on their hands. (I wonder what their parents were thinking! So irresponsible!) Last Friday, Preston woke up with a high fever -- 38.8 deg celcius. I found it odd because he had no other symptoms (runny/blocked nose, cough, sore throat etc) & he was in a happy mood. In fact, he got into an even happier mood when i told him he had to stay home from school as he was having a fever. -_-"
In the afternoon, my MIL phoned to say his fever was still high & we decided to take him to the Doc. Dr Lim discovered red sores at the back of his throat and 1 red spot was found on his right hand. Uh oh! Preston became a HFMD suspect case with a 80-90% chance of being infected. I quickly phoned his school and reported it to his Principal.
And yes, he is really down with HFMD though with Episode 2, the sores seem to be largely confined to his mouth area. His feet & hands are still quite clear though i'm wondering if more spots will appear when his fever subsides. Luckily, with the prior experience, Aug & i stocked up on cold soft foods at NTUC last week.
So over the weekend, the little rascal has been surviving on a child's dream diet -- strawberry jelly, strawberry yogurt, frozen juice pops, cold ribena & ice cream. Luckily, he was still drinking his milk and eating soft foods so i think the pain level is still tolerable. Last evening, he even managed to eat 2 pieces of ebikko sushi & 2 bowls of chanwanmushi. :)
Having said that, HFMD has put Preston in a foul mood. He has been incredibly sticky, cranky & whiny...and bursting into loud bawling at every opportunity, even waking up in the middle of the night to cry and move to our bed. All of which made me very tired and rather frustrated on Saturday.
I absolutely CANNOT wait for him to recover. Though this 1 week away from school will very likely result in more tears & crying in the mornings when he returns to school.
*sigh*
On a positive note, remember my
hunt for the Trunki? That very same friend (that's you Adel!) who hunted all over San Francisco for it, is flying to London next month and she has offered to look for Freddie the Fire Engine there. :) So i shall be prudent & keep my fingers crossed for good news!
