It had been over a week since I made a Hellblazer post.

So DC Comics has been lying like a rug for the past while, it turns out. This has turned out well in one case, badly in another ( Read more... )

I'd love to be reading Hellblazer, but I don't think I'd fully appreciate today's stories without reading what has come before. I'm currently waiting for them to release the Fear Machine trade, which Amazon has listed for a June release (although you can usually get books earlier from proper comic book retailers). I'm sort of a wait-for-the-trade snob. (And now that we know they are releasing a third trade of Delano's Hellblazer, it's kind of safe to assume they will release the rest of it... eventually.)

It'll be the 40th anniversary by the time it's all out.

Which means there will be maybe 60 to 80 trades.

Oh, easily. I mean, look at Ennis and Azzarello. Each of them had their work collected in, I think, six to eight trade paperbacks. Delano's headed roughly that direction too. So, 6-8 trades is 40 issues. 40 years of 12 issues... yeah, somewhere between 60 and 80 trade paperbacks.
See, it really is readable out of order. I promise.
Hey, are you still in the area? Maybe we should figure out a way to get you participating in the marathon reading.

Sure, if we can work that out. I suppose the Garth Ennis run is next for me. I guess I should start looking into the back issues.

Is your marathon also including miniseries and crossovers? (There was a Hellblazer/Books of Magic story they did a while back, if I recall.)

Also, you might want to check out Grant Morrison's Doom Patrol for a look at Golden Age John Constantine.

For myself, I'm not including spinoffs that don't actually have a)the Hellblazer title somewhere in there, and b)John as the main character. So I'm going to include the Hellblazer/Books of Magic crossover mini, which is absolutely FANTASTIC.

I have read that segment of Doom Patrol. I love it dearly. I'm really fond of all the alternate versions of John that are out there. It's one of the reasons I want to read Books of Magic: Life During Wartime. I mean, John and Chas as well-adjusted teenage lesbians?!

There was also Paul Dini's Zatanna one-shot, in which Constantine appears. I was told, however, that Dini got the Constantine/Zatanna interaction all wrong.

He did. I've read it. It wasn't as bad as a lot of people say, but they were kind of lovey-dovey, which, uh. No. It's extremely rare that John gets lovey-dovey with anybody, and when he does it's a sign that he's considering actually settling down with them. No, Zatanna is a repeated fling, and both of them know it ( ... )
