Dots and more dots

On a whim (and suggestion because of my drastic reduction in eyesight), I looked into braille but I can't "read" it at all. My finger runs over it and all I get is "Ooh, that feels kind of nice".

How do people learn to read this? Just years of conditioning your fingers to be able to distinguish the dot patterns?
