Title: Overlapping Worlds
Pairing: Sehun/Kai
Rating: G
Summary: They live in the same house, in the same space, at the same time. In the same world, but not really.
"Out." It was time to move, Sehun thought. Kai had an obvious loose screw in the head. He cannot take any more of his oddness, and he was not going to let him stand on his living room floor for another minute. He strode towards Kai to grab him by the arm but Kai jumped back.
"Wait, I have a key." Kai held out a single key.
"So, you stole the key." Sehun scoffed and turned to face the door, and there, next to it on the wall, was his key.
"How did you get a duplicate key?" Sehun turned back to Kai who was watching him with a confused look.
"Here's the thing." Kai started, looking for the right words to explain what he can't seem to explain anyway.
"4 hours ago, I came to live here. And I am living here." He pocketed his own key and faced the wall where his picture was, the exact place where Sehun said his was. "And so are you."

There was awkward silence as Sehun stared at his toast in front of him on the dining table. It was late for breakfast, but he didn't have anything for lunch either unless he cooks something up. However, cooking is impossible at the moment. Especially when there's a random guy who just suddenly showed up claiming he was living in the same house he was in, and was now staring straight at him with a look of curiosity and interest in him.
An hour ago, he was still doubtful about the creep's identity, but as he repeatedly explained that he lived there, he was slowly starting to believe it. It's not like he had done anything bad to him yet, even though he had had a lot of chances and the most offensive he had done yet so far was call him a pervert. He wasn't physically hurt by that.
"I still don't understand." Sehun gave up on his toast, he didn't have the appetite anyway, not when Kai was talking about out-of-this-world matters like another dimension and alternative reality. He figured earlier that he must be dreaming and so he gave himself a slap on the face. But apart from Kai mockingly asking him if he needed a hand, he didn't seem to wake up from a dream.
"Like you have another world and I have my own?" Sehun thought of it for a moment while he flicked the channels on TV a few minutes later.
"Yes. Only the difference is, I am in your world and you are in mine." Kai put a final tone into it as if to put that it's the only explanation.
"Like overlapping?" The younger couldn't help but agree to the only explanation Kai could present. He mentally reminded himself to visit his doctor soon because even though he feels physically fit, he wasn't sure if he is mentally. Or if Kai is, too.
"There's a reason why what you see is different from what I can. Like that flower pot outside. You described it to be alive and full of flowers when I see nothing but an empty pot. You said your shoes were where my shoes are. Your pictures on the wall, which I can't really see. I only have one on my wall right now. It's really weird, I know." Kai immediately added the last comment upon seeing Sehun's creased forehead.
"So what do we do now?" He asked, still not quite grasping the whole of it.
"There must be a reason why we can see each other. There is an outward force that made our worlds meet. Something might have gone wrong to the universe's entropy that we're suddenly co-existing in the same space at the same time, yet in different worlds. We conincidentally overlapped, and both our worlds collided." Kai ended his speech with a hopeful face as if his discovery might save the world from its current dilemma. In which Sehun didn't really know what is, as he had more problems to deal with on his own.
Sehun was chugging down a refreshing juice he whipped earlier while Kai was, as he explained, putting out his things. He thought that he should call the police, but he never really considered it. There was something wrong with Kai, very wrong, but there was something nice about him too. It was either his chill personality or the way he just feels relaxed around a stranger like him, Sehun. In other words, he felt welcomed by Kai. Which is funny because he's the one supposed to be welcoming him.
"Sehun-ah." Kai appeared in the kitchen with a small smile on his face. Sehun doesn't really remember when he had ever mentioned his name to Kai, but since he had been bombarded with a lot of extraordinary odd things first thing in the morning, he had a reason why he can't remember.
He faced the happy Kai walking towards him.
"What?"
"I've fixed my room and my bed. I'm done. Thanks for letting me in. Although, no thanks because I really paid for this house, I have the right." He grinned, stopped right in front of him and his gaze dropped to the juice Sehun was holding.
"You want some?" He asked uncomfortably. Kai should stop staring at him that way because it was always making him feel uneasy.
"Sehun, can I touch you?" The newcomer blatantly asked aloud in which made Sehun almost drop the glass in his hand.
"What." Pink spots started creeping on his face and he was feeling slightly embarrassed at the way Kai had said things so easily.
"So that I would know if you are real. I can see the glass of juice in your hand, I wanna know if I can also... interact with your world." Kai explained slowly as he watched Sehun flush more.
"Also, just to make sure you are not dead." He added the last bit jokingly.
Sehun pursed his slightly parted lips as Kai advanced more on him. There was an amused glint in Kai's eyes, Sehun noticed, but he was too busy looking at the closing in Kai to care about what he was up to. He sensed himself tense, although he didn't understand why. It's probably the lack of experience of having the presence of strangers around him.
At first, Kai used his pointer finger and poked Sehun's arm. Sehun did not repsond to it and let Kai finish. But Kai wasn't close to getting finished.
"Oooh." Kai whispered as if Sehun's flesh was very fascinating.
He poked him again on the shoulder. And on his finger. He poked his chin, and then his nose. Sehun's eyes crossed as he followed Kai's finger with his gaze.
"Oooh." Kai repeated, this time with a smile.
By the time Kai was exploring more of Sehun's world, aka his face which he was practically kneading like a dough, Sehun was already shouting at him.
"Enough. Enough!" He pushed Kai's hands off of his face. He was already crimson on the face, the heat creeping up rapidly to his cheeks.
Kai straightened up and realized he was over the limit. "Uhm, therefore you are real." He announced in a serious tone, but failed at hiding his smile.
Sehun massaged his cheeks as he gave dagger looks at the boy who was now focused on something in his mind. He wasn't sure why Kai was doing all this, but if he really was from another world, then maybe all of this is an answer to his many questions. Just as how Sehun needed answers to his own.
"I can touch you." Kai spoke after a few minutes of silence and deep thinking. "I've crossed your world."
"Hey!" Sehun's voice rose as he just came out of the shower, fully dressed, when he discovered Kai lying on his bed.
"Don't tell me-"
"I am sleeping here. This is my room." Kai broke it to him.
"This is my room, first." Sehun argued.
"This is my room, now." Kai simply answered back.
"Remember, you're not supposed to see me. But since our worlds got messed up together, you can. But if you didn't, it would have been all the same. The two of us probably sleeping on the same bed, at different worlds. Possible. No big deal." Kai stood from the bed and clapped his hands together as if to clean them up.
"You can go rest now, I gotta wash up. G'night." He patted Sehun's head before disappearing from the door.
For three days, the same thing happened to Sehun. He still had that weird feeling of being around a stranger in his house. Kai was practically everywhere he was. He would have considered him a phantom if not for during their second day together where he accidentally tripped on his own feet and hit Kai, who apparently was standing in front of him. He caught him by the shoulders, and Sehun felt him. He was hard, and soft at the same time Sehun couldn't explain how. He exists in his world extraordinarily. Nevertheless, he still exists.
He found it weird how he's already getting used to it just after 5 days. He normally couldn't even get used to the people in his school before, and that already took years. That's probably one of the reasons why he quit and stopped schooling. Well, the main reason being his mother telling him to quit anyway.
Sehun found Kai a bit interesting. He observed that Kai sleeps so deeply that he looks like a dead man if not for his calm soft breathing. Sometimes he would see him cooking early in the morning. It appears that Kai is a better cook than him. It was like having a roommate, only sometimes the roommate is weird. Like how most of the time Sehun catches him taking pictures of the things around him with a camera when he thinks Sehun isn't looking. He doesn't know what it was for, if what he sees is his world. Clearly, your own world wouldn't fascinate you that much if you've been living in it for years. But then again, Kai tends to be interesting. And Sehun found that cute.
One day, Kai sat next to Sehun in the living room. Sehun was quite used to having Kai close, especially when he once woke up with Kai's face just right in front of him. He thought he'd find it annoying, but there's a reason why he never admits that there is always his mother's bedroom. But he doesn't really know why.
Sehun looked up and Kai looked like he was contemplating whether he should or should not do whatever he was thinking of doing.
"Shoot." Sehun announced, helping Kai decide on the matter in his head.
"Is he your boyfriend?" He asked so casually that Sehun considerd for a moment if he was kidding him or not. Apparently, he didn't look like he was.
"Who?" He finally asked.
"Luhan. You called his name in your sleep."
"Oh." A tiny o appeared on the younger's lips. "I did?"
"Yes." Kai simply waited for another answer.
Sehun paused. He was sure there was something more to his feelings for his friend. But before he had the time to realize it, he had gone. And Sehun never really bothered knowing what it was.
"No."
"What, no?" Kai egged.
"He's not my boyfriend." Kai noticed the way Sehun answered him. It was short and had no emotion. And he seemed to understand what it meant.
"You also mentioned another one." Sehun looked at him again. "Your mother."
"Really." Sehun gave a short laugh.
"Yeah."
"Did I call out anybody else?"
"No, just them."
Sehun smiled bitterly. "Of course. They're the only people I know."
"But you did say one more thing." Kai observed Sehun before continuing. "You said 'don't go'."
Sehun gave a soft icy laugh. "A dream."
Kai looked at him meaningfully. Must be a dream. Only it repeats every night, he thought to himself. "You're a lonely kid inside, aren't you?"
Sehun didn't answer and remained silent. Kai noticed the change in his expression and the mood he had caused. "Sorry, I didn't mean to."
It was awhile before Sehun spoke up again.
"You're right." He admitted. "I'm lonely."
Maybe living alone in the house, waiting for his mother to come home to kiss him goodnight before he sleeps but never really happens he actually stopped hoping makes him lonely. Maybe after being left by a friend who promised he will have more friends when he's gone which didn't happen forced him to feel more lonely. Maybe he was lonely. Yes, he was lonely. But he was too busy searching for what his life was made for he only realizes this in his dreams, when he's asleep, when he's unconscious. But he did not dare say anything more to Kai. There was too much to bear already, he would not open that much to a stranger, even if it's Kai.
The boy beside him merely blinked at his confession. Of course it would stun him after his statement, there was nothing he could reply to that. Sehun leaned on the couch, knowing Kai wouldn't care that much if he had said his real feelings. They only had days together, that's not enough to make him feel involved with Sehun's personal life.
However, a soft warm hand landed on top of his.
"How about with me around, does it help?" Kai's palm closed in on his hand. "I really hope it does." He said honestly.
Sehun felt goosebumps on his arms, for what reason, he wasn't sure. He gave a little laugh.
"It does."
And to his surprise at himself, it was a genuine laugh. For some reason, he was happy with someone he barely knew.

It was one of those nights Sehun was restlessly talking in his sleep. Kai automatically woke up. He heard it again.
"Luhan."
"Sehun-"
"Mom."
"Sehu-"
"No. Don't go."
Kai didn't know what to do. It was creepy enough that it repeats every night. Soon it was going to haunt Kai in his dreams too.
"Sehun." He held Sehun's hand, but the younger was obviously asleep, just dreaming.
"Don't go." Sehun whispered, his voice weak.
Kai couldn't take it, ever since day 1 he couldn't. He wiped the sweat on Sehun's forehead, pushing away his hair from his eyes. Unconsciously, he collected Sehun in his arms. The younger had stopped talking but his face still had the trace of restlessness. He wrapped one arm around the smaller boy, his other under his head, serving as his pillow. Sehun curled up into a ball in his arms. Kai watched him relax his face slowly, drifting off to a peaceful deep slumber again. He's not sure whether it was because of the aid of his touch. But if it was it, he'd do it all night to make it stop. To make all his sufferings go, even if it's just through the night.
Sehun woke up with his face resting on Kai's chest. He wondered how he had ended up there as a blush started creeping on his cheeks. He tried to move away until he realized that he was enveloped in Kai's arms, safely and securely. He was about to wake him up when he looked at his face. It was very calm and peaceful he already felt guilty at the thought of disturbing his sleep. Instead, he rested his head back on his chest. It's the first time in forever that he had been this close to someone. He had never had direct contact with anyone, not this close, not even with Luhan. It felt so good he can feel his heart swelling up. Kai's heartbeat was in a much more calm rhythm compared to his, which was practically thumping too hard he thought it was going to burst out. If being close to someone feels like this, he didn't mind the minor pain of the thumping on his chest, he'd want to experience it all the time. As Sehun inched closer to the warm body next to him, Kai stirred. He opened his eyes and found Sehun staring straight at him. The latter grew red in the face but Kai just gave a warm smile that caused a tug on Sehun's heart.
"You were having nightmares." Kai explained briefly as to why he was in his arms. In which Sehun just gave a short nod and a shy "Thanks."
From then on, Kai holds Sehun's hand as they sleep with the younger's consent. And they wake up the next morning with Sehun crumpled up in Kai's arms. Slowly, the nightmares went away.
"Your turn." Sehun announced as they both have their heads together over the center table in the living room. They were seated on the floor beside each other, their heads bowed down together onto Sehun's what he called "messy unfinished drafts". When Kai took a look at it, it was far from what he would normally call messy and unfinished. They were all sketches of what mostly fascinates Sehun. They were merely sketches of wild flowers, birds in a clear blue sky, the sunrise, an airplane in the open. The next ones were faceless people, a little boy, a slightly young boy in the middle of a busy crowd, two good friends sharing each other's happiness over a drink, a man, and lastly a woman.
"I'm not really trained in drawing faces, so I didn't want to mess them up." Sehun told Kai as he collected his drafts from his hand. He arranged them carefully in order, piling the human drawings behind everything else.
Sehun was looking at Kai, waiting for his turn to say something about himself.
"How about you? Any interests, hobbies?" He had his arms laid on the table, so were Kai's. Sehun rested his head on his arms and faced Kai, one side of his face blocked by his arm.
"Not really." The guy beside him answered, looking down at his hands spread on the table.
"Don't you like photography?" Sehun interjected. "I've seen you taking pictures around before." He shyly added.
"Oh. It's just one of my interests but..." Kai trailed off, he didn't know Sehun was watching him.
"Do you have an album?" Sehun eagerly asked, the thought of looking closer at Kai's life made him excited. To be honest, everything about Kai excites him.
"None yet so far." Kai shook his head. "When I'm done, I'll show you." He promised, giving Sehun another of his heart-warming smiles.
"Promise?" Sehun sat up and leaned forward closer to Kai with his moon-like eyesmile. Kai laughed at his cuteness and pinched his nose.
"I promise."
The days became more and more memorable to Sehun. He didn't know when he had been this happy, probably never until now.
Him and Kai shared light hugs every now and then. Sometimes Kai would just hold his hand out of the blue and then claims it's because he doesn't want Sehun lonely. Oftentimes at night, even though he hadn't witnessed it when he's fully awake, he thinks he feels him giving him a light kiss on the forehead when he snuggles closer to Kai. He thinks it's because Kai really expresses himself a lot, and he knows he was honest when he said he didn't want him to feel lonely. His friendship with him grew into something he had never had with anyone. He doesn't really understand their situation yet, all he knows is that Kai is very special to him. And he wouldn't want him to go.
***
Sehun had almost forgotten about the mystery between Kai and him. He was too normal and ordinary for him as days passed by, until that one day, he was reminded that they didn't belong to the same world. That fateful day when his mother came home.
