Title: Resurrection
Rating: PG
Pairing: Sehun/Kai
Summary: A piercing scream, a loud honk, a powerful crash... did he come back to life?
Kai was carefully placing a thick filling of strawberry jam in between two loaves of bread while he swayed his head to the beat of "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together". Kyungsoo decided to help him make breakfast for them, strawberry sandwiches, the moment he saw Kai struggling with the glass jar's lid early that morning.
"So, Taylor Swift?" Kyungsoo chuckled softly as he stole a glance at the speakers set beside the toaster.
"I haven't listened to new music since... I don't remember. So I copied Baekhyun's playlist." Kai just shrugged and continued with placing thicker and thicker strawberry filling in his sandwiches before setting them separately from the rest.
Kyungsoo paused to look at him for a moment. "Baekhyun. Has Taylor Swift. In his playlist."
"Looks like it." Kai didn't seem to be as interested as Kyungsoo was but then he was too focused on what he's doing.
"Interesting." The other commented before looking at the pile of sandwiches on Kai's side. "Kai, there are only 5 people in this house. Why are we making something that's good for 20?"
"Oh. I might get hungry while you're all away. Especially now that Baekhyun's accepted his father's offer, I think I'll be alone more often." He wanted to sound disheartened but didn't manage to hide the smile spreading on his face.
"I would have felt bad but then why does it sound like you're happier in this kind of situation." Kyungsoo eyed him suspiciously.
"It's nothing. I'm just happy for all of you." That, he really meant.
There was a pause in Kyungsoo's side while Kai just sang along with the 'ever ever ever ever' part.
It was one of the hard things that's been happening in their apartment lately. Kai never showed any sign of depression nor weakness in front of them, he would always look calm and worry-free. And it makes it harder when he's the one encouraging them with their lives, when in fact he's the one who needs picking up.
"Also. You can take some to your work, university, whichever." Kai said it nonchalantly while he washed his hands. Kyungsoo noticed he left some sandwiches on his side and he thought those might be reserved for him later when he gets hungry. The rest Kai put with Kyungsoo's sandwiches.
"Tell Chanyeol I insist he take some. Modeling is not an easy thing." Kai grinned and took his part before placing them in a plastic container.
Kyungsoo smiled. "Chanyeol doesn't like being teased about it."
"Not teasing." He put up a serious face and Chanyeol came in the kitchen just in time. "Oh hey buddy!"
Chanyeol looked up with groggy eyes while Kai passed by him happily, the container in his hand securely. Apparently, Chanyeol came home late the previous night from a shoot.
"Hey." He greeted with his deep sleepy voice. "Why's that kid so happy?" He asked Kyungsoo who only shook his head.
"Looks like something happened."
The door bell rang.
The door swung open and a grumpy Sehun came face to face with a smiling Kai. Sehun's face immediately changed back to normal when he realized it was Kai at his door.
"Why are you so early?"
"I brought breakfast. I thought we could have it together since I don't have anyone to share it with." A small frown appeared on Kai's face and he knew it worked when Sehun stepped back a little to let him in. However, his forehead was still creased.
"Why do you look like you woke up in the wrong side of the bed though?" Kai asked as he passed by him to enter the living room, carrying the sandwiches he packed with him.
Sehun sighed before he closed the door and sulked while standing beside it.
"I thought you were my brother. I thought maybe he felt he was wrong to let me go here alone and followed me immediately instead. But then, surprise! No show of him." He huffed one more time before walking over to the same couch he laid Kai on when he knocked him out once with the door.
"He never called?" Kai was busily unpacking the sandwiches.
"He did call yesterday but then... it's still different when he's here to keep me company from having him give excuses on the other line." Sehun raised a brow in annoyance but then Kai offered him a sandwich.
"Thanks." Sehun took it and gave it a bite.
"Don't worry, then. If company's all you're looking for, guess what? I know this guy who lives un-fruitfully and he's still looking for something to do. Maybe this is his calling." Kai nudged Sehun.
He was still chewing when he raised another brow at his new friend. "Really? He must be so boring that no one wants to bother him."
"Ya!" Kai pushed his shoulder lightly, the contact slightly making him blush, before they both laughed.
"Ah." Sehun closed his eyes and for a moment Kai thought something was aching.
"Strawberry. This is my favorite."
Kai's eyes lit up and a rush of familiar feeling poured on him.
"你是最棒. (You’re the best)" Sehun gave him the thumbs up.
Kai smiled at him affectionately before shrugging. He didn't know what it meant but it sounded good.
"I meant you're the-"
"That's surprising. It's my friend's favorite too."
"Thanks for taking me around today."
It was half past six when Sehun noticed the time and thought it was enough touring around for his first official day in Korea, as what Kai had said. They've gone to many places and they could now feel the soreness in both their legs and feet.
"Like I said I really have nothing to do much with my life now so it's more than my pleasure."
"Sometimes I wonder why you always say that. Would I be able to know the reason behind it one of these days?" Sehun squinted his eyes at his seemingly newly employed tourguide, without pay. "Or will it all just be about 'operation-tour-Shixun-around-until-he-says-stop' for the whole week slash time I will be alone here?"
"We'll see. If you'll be a good kid." Kai joked.
"Nah. I don't think your life's interesting anyway, being good won't be worth it." Sehun mocked.
"Your loss."
Sehun chuckled. "I've already said thanks so, bye Kai."
Kai knew it was time to go. "Goodnight Shixun."
Sehun only made a shoo-ing gesture before he playfully grinned and closed the door.
The moment he heard the lock click, Kai's smile faded away. He turned around and walked along the quiet street with his head bowed down.
There was no one on the road but there were voices echoing inside his head, as if arguing about something. He didn't know what to think now but there was one thing that was clear to him.
He didn't only look like Sehun, he was so much like him.
♦
"Sehun, you'll still be able to live tomorrow."
Chanyeol rolled his eyes as the youngest among them just ignored him. Sehun was picking out fresh strawberries from a strawberry stand and he was actually buying a whole month's supply.
"Someone is pregnant." Kyungsoo shook his head as they all watched and waited for Sehun to decide how much did he want to take home for now.
The strawberry in Sehun's hand rolled out of his palm when he caught Kyungsoo's words. "Who is?"
"You." Baekhyun told him uniterested-ly. The rest snickered. Baekhyun's eyes bored into him but he knew he was also laughing behind that poker face mask.
"Shut up." Sehun went back to counting the pack of strawberries he already picked. He scratched his head when he couldn't decide whether to buy more or not.
"Kai, how did it even happen? I thought you guys were being safe." Chanyeol said rather loud enough for even the vendor to hear. A strawberry flew to his face and it stained a pink tint on his cheek.
"I'll pay for that." Sehun immediately told the vendor as he glared at Chanyeol. No one spoke again because they knew how bad it could go if they keep pushing. Kai only held back his smiles while they walked back to Suho's family car he borrowed from his father that day.
"Seriously though, it's a little too much." Kai admitted when he and Sehun settled at the back seat of the small van as he looked at the plastic bag Sehun was carrying.
"But I love strawberries."
"And no one can talk about our little private activities like that." Sehun added as he glared at the back of Chanyeol's head. Kai laughed.
"Embarrassed?" Kai leaned in until his nose touched Sehun's cheek. He inhaled his scent and the smell of fresh strawberries swarmed his olfactory sense.
"No." Sehun tilted his head so he was facing Kai, his lips slightly brushing against his. He pulled back.
Kai reached for Sehun's left wrist and inhaled his scent there. Soon, he was planting light kisses on the skin above his pulse.
"What are you doing?"
"What do you think?" Kai smirked.
"I don't know. You tell me." Sehun feigned coldness.
"Hmm, we'll see. If you'll be a good kid."
"Nah. I don't think it's anything interesting, being good won't be worth it."
Kai frowned.
Sehun chuckled. "Sehun 1, Kai 0."
♦
Kai sat on his bed that night, the only source of light was coming from his laptop screen.
"Sehun 2, Kai still 0." He said to himself.
Finding new happiness in someone is good. But finding it in someone he barely knows, he was unsure whether it's good. Finding it in someone he barely knows yet he feels as if he's known him all along is something he couldn't really distinguish if it's still good or not. The similarities make him sad, in fact, it makes him feel like he can't move forward. It roots him to his spot and makes him believe in a truth that is impossible to exist. Sehun is dead. But his mind tells him otherwise.
He recalled how Shixun acted so much like Sehun the whole day. He couldn't help but think something that's out of the box. Something that could explain how this thing is happening.
Sehun is dead but he met a new person by the name of Shixun who acts and looks exactly like the deceased one. Coincidence? Or something deeper?
Kai pulled his laptop and typed in.
Resurrection
• The act of returning to life.
Kai's eyebrows creased at the articles he was reading. It didn't make sense. How can someone rise from the dead? How can it happen? Kai scrolled down the text as he was engulfed in his reading. It didn't say anything about becoming an entirely new person. Resurrection didn't provide information about memory loss nor identity confusion. It doesn't give anything.
Kai shook his head at what he's doing. It isn't right. He knows it's all about Sehun. He's never going to be able to move on if he keeps insisting that Shixun is Sehun.
Shixun is not Sehun.
"I know." Kai sighed to himself. He's gone.
The next day, Kai was already waiting at the door, hands in his pockets because the hand warmers he wore weren't doing much of its job. It was a really cold early morning and he could see his breath escape his lips whenever he opens his mouth. He sighed, more clouded smoke came out, and he could feel his eyes droop. He didn't get enough sleep last night. And it won't be fair if he denies that it has anything to do with Sehun. He sighed once more.
"Playing with the fog you make?" Sehun startled Kai when he appeared from the door so suddenly, his clothes thicker than what Kai was wearing. "It's too cold right? Want to get in first and wait til the sun is high enough before we go?"
Kai had planned out the itinerary well for today, but since the weather doesn't look so good, he agreed to push the schedule a little later.
"Coffee, juice or tea?" Sehun automatically asked as he paused on his way to the kitchen.
"Coffee."
Kai settled on the familiar couch and browsed through the magazine lying open on the glass center table. He was a coffee guy. Sometimes they tease him it's the coffee that makes his skin darker. To which Kai just rolls his eyes everytime it's brought up. Coffee soothes him. As if it was made for him. He doesn't understand why there are people who can't even touch coffee. For him it's the drink of the drinks. Kai sighed the third time that day. If there's anyone who hates coffee the most, he very well knows who he is.
♦
"Stop making coffee." Sehun was sitting on the egde of the table, away from Kai who was busily operating the cofee machine, which only he uses the most, Suho occasionally, with his back turned. When he was done and had turned around, he found Sehun looking at him in disgust with his nose pinched in between his thumb and index finger.
Kai gave him a look that says 'seriously?'
"Everybody has addiction Sehun." His eyes darted to the small sack of strawberries that had barely made it to their refrigerator before he looked back at Sehun. "Yep."
"But coffee smells so bad." Sehun said indignantly before standing and turning to leave.
"It isn't so bad." Kai shrugged and sat on the freshly emptied seat by Sehun. He took a sniff of the aroma before sipping on it like a man behind a grand desk.
Sehun watched him when he stopped at the door.
"But coffee is----"
♦
"---isn't usually my thing."
Kai's eyes snapped back to reality and he realized he was still staring blankly at the same page of the magazine he was holding. His head whipped to where Sehun was with the small tray in his hands, a cup of steaming coffee on it.
Kai stood in reflex to help him but Sehun shook his head and gently laid the tray on the table.
"What were you saying?" Kai asked, feeling quite foolish for spacing out and diving into his memories. It wasn't him to be caught off guard and pulled into his well-kept recollection of Sehun moments. He was so good at hiding his worries that he only faces them when he's alone. Not when he's with anyone. More importantly not when he's with Shixun.
"I said it's lucky I have coffee in stock. It usually isn't my thing." He stirred the blackish liquid in Kai's cup before handing it to him. The cup was so warm in Kai's hands that he immediately felt the temperature rise around him.
"Really?" Kai hid the surprise in his voice and took a sip. It felt refreshing.
"It's been a few days since we've met and I'm learning a lot of things about you."
Sehun smiled but it didn't reach his eyes. "Sorry. I must have sounded so selfish."
"No. No." Kai immediately shook his head, being careful with the way he held the cup in his hands. "It's not what I mean. I actually like it. Knowing you is quite interesting."
Sehun nodded slightly and looked away. Kai didn't know what to say so he shifted his eyes on the magazine on his lap. As he was about to turn to the next page, he recognized a familiar face on the glossy paper opened in front of him. It was Chanyeol. Kai was half in awe and half amused. He snickered silently before a thought came to him.
Would Shixun recognize Chanyeol if he pointed him out to him?
But he didn't recognize him. What would he do if he recognizes Chanyeol?
"So where are we going today?"
"Seems like you know the place."
They were walking along a foot bridge near the resort. Kai wanted to tour him somewhere farther away from town. If Sehun needed to search as far as he could go, he'd gladly help him go to places with him. Kai sighed inwardly. He knew another reason why he brought him here. Because it's the place he had unforgettable memories with the real Sehun, his Sehun. And standing next to Sehun, Shixun, made it feel as if he was with him gain.
But Sehun looked at the place with recognition.
"It seems like it's not your first time here."
Sehun beamed at him. "It isn't."
His response took Kai by surprise.
"Not just here, but the town as well?" It was a wild guess, but now that he looked back at the previous days, Sehun didn't seem to be so new to the place. Another question popped in Kai's head. Of all places, why did he choose to search the town he lives in?
Sehun bit his bottom lip, a small smile still played in his lips. "I guess you got me there again."
Kai held his breath.
"It's not my first time in Korea, actually. In your town in particular." Sehun rubbed his hands to the sides of his coat. "Your town is actually where my mother used to live. When I was a kid, we flew here to beg her to come home with us. But..."
A cold breeze swept past them as Sehun paused to face the sun, the both of them standing in the middle of the bridge, while they watch people coming in and out of the resort gates not so far away.
"Obviously, she didn't want to come." Sehun gave Kai a light smile. "That was the first and last time I saw her."
Sehun didn't frown nor show any pain he's feeling but Kai felt as if he wanted to comfort him, hold his hand? Or pat his back? He didn't know which to do, but when he looked at Sehun's face, he was reminded once more that he is in the same situation as him. He, as well, has that someone he wouldn't see ever again. And the face he's looking at now was the best reminder he could ever have.
A broken smile appeared on Kai's face.
"Why does it feel like you know me so much?" Sehun changed the subject and started walking down the foot of the bridge.
"We'll find your mother." Kai caught up with him and decided to just stay as close to him as possible. That's the least he could do for now.
"As long as she still lives, you still have hope. Don't give up just yet." He gave him a light pat on the back.
Sehun stopped in his tracks and looked at Kai admirably. Kai did the same and gave him a questioning brow.
"Thanks." Sehun offered his hand to shake Kai's.
Kai stared at it before reaching out as well. "You'll find her."
Their hands stayed lock for a moment.
Kai was still up late that night, dealing with his computer as he continued researching for he doesn't know what.
It was weird.
Really weird.
Kai scratched his head in frustration. The only source of light was from his screen.
He is so Sehun but he is not Sehun.
"What is it then?"
He clicked on the search bar and typed.
Reincarnation
• The belief that when a person dies, its soul is reborn in another body.
Kai shook his head. It doesn't work that way.
He paused before thinking back to earlier. The real Sehun hates coffee. Shixun dislikes it too. Was it another coincidence?
He closed his eyes and replayed the last words they spoke of before they parted.
"Hey Shixun. I think I might know something that could help you get your mother to notice that you're here."
His fingertips hovered the keys before he typed something in again.
Possession
• The power to inhabit the body of an individual.
Goosebumps crept on his skin as he read it. Just as when he was about to read more about it, he felt a presence near the door. Soon enough, a figure past by. Kai immediately stood and rushed out of his room.
"Chanyeol!"
The tall guy looked at him tiredly.
"What's up?"
"How was the shoot?"
"It went fine." The way he stood told Kai how exhausted he was. So he went straight to the point.
"Listen, I have a friend who needs help. Is it possible to get his face and his name on a magazine? Help me?"
Chanyeol looked at him thoughtfully.
This is a step to getting to know more about Shixun. So Kai is determined.
Thank you for waiting. It's just that 2013 is going to be my busiest :| I'm sorry.
