[Having practiced with this little device, Nakago has managed to understand some of its functions. It looks like it will prove to be useful now as he studies it calmly, expression neutral.]

I have heard of a holiday that is fast approaching. But I fail to see what it is.

[Have a bright, happy, too-eager-to-please smile]

Christmas is one of the most celebrated holidays in the world! It has its origins in the Christian religion to celebrate the birth of their lord, but for most people these days it's more about being with loved ones and exchanging gifts. Though a more cynical person would probably tell you it's about commercialism and greed and annoying music for the entire month leading up to it.

[Listens politely. At least she appears intelligent enough.]

Thank you. That is useful for me to know.

Sure! Do you have any other questions about it?

I suppose that the decorations are supposed to have the point of making others happy?

Mmh, I think that's probably the jist of it for the most part. People can get really festive about this holiday-- sometimes scarily so. Sometimes the decorations are used as a way to communicate how hard you celebrate the holiday, even if it's just the presents and big dinner part.

I have noticed the need to be festive among some of the citizens. There are times when it is interesting to see.

[Looks a little amused by this observation.]

It gets a little crazy. But it's lots of fun, too. And the best Christmases are the ones when there's snow on the ground.

Is there a reason for that?

[Takes a moment to think about that]

It's just the ideal image. Christmas is a winter holiday and having snow on the ground makes everything really pretty, especially with all the lights. I don't think it has a practical reason. It just makes people feel good.

[And he's finding this holiday terribly pointless. But he'll indulge her. She seems naive.]

The lights that I have managed to see are pleasant to look at.

I love looking at all the lights. Especially after the sun goes down, and when they use lots of different colors... I'm Aya Fujimiya, by the way. You are?

[Yeah, abrupt subject change ahoy, but what could she do? She just realized she hadn't introduced herself.]

[He hardly seems to mind. Names are useful, after all.]

I am Nakago. It is my pleasure to meet you.

The pleasure's mine. If you want any more information on Christmas, there's a great library and bookstore here. I'm sure you can find some books on the history of it and some other elements of it like Santa Claus if you're interested.

Santa Claus?

[Grins sheepishly.]

This is going to sound really stupid from the perspective of anyone who's not grown up with it. Santa Claus is a mythological icon of Christmas. Supposedly he lives at the North Pole, and keeps a list all year of which children are good and which are bad. Then on Christmas Eve after everyone has gone to bed he rides a sleigh pulled by nine flying reindeer all over the world, and leaves presents to kids by going down their chimneys. Kids write letters to him with wish lists and while the good kids get what they want, the bad kids get lumps of coal.

[With a childhood like his, he finds this tradition to be the ridiculous so far. He knows that not all 'good' children are allowed such joys. Still, he offers a small smile.]

Children must be very eager for his arrival then.
