Parental Units Attacked By Tree

The trees are lashing out!

Yesterday my parents' home was invaded by a branch from the large tree outside their bedroom window! It had broken from the ice. The window was smashed and the roof damaged as well. My folks are OK because they were at the other end of the house when it happened. Lucky it wasn't at night! :o
They were able to put a tarp over the window and are sleeping in the other room until it gets fixed. When the tree-cutters were on the roof sawing up the branch, a section fell through the hole in the roof into the attic, and Dad said it could stay there because he was not about to climb up and get it.
Mom said that on top of everything else, they had just gotten a new roof last year. She was really concerned about all the tiny grains of glass that went all over the foot of their bed and the bookcase near the window. They are throwing away the bedcovers, etc. because there are little bits of glass stuck into the fibers that can't be picked out; this includes a really nice deep green plush throw that my sister gave to them for Christmas last year. Mom told me she joked to my sister that Carol would just have to buy them another one for this Christmas. Unbeknownst to Mom, if Carol can't swing it due to finances, I will either help her or get it for them myself. I never know what to get them except yet another gift card(ugh). I mean, I know their tastes in music and books, but they keep telling me that at their time of life (70s) they don't want any more things to clutter up the house. I do see their point--as children of the Depression, they hardly ever throw anything away except actual garbage, so their house is full of stuff(including things that used to belong to both sets of grandparents, before *they* passed away).
I'm just glad they're all right. It scares me sometimes how fragile they are now that they are older. My dad is still healing from his carpal tunnel surgery, taking extra long due to his diabetes, and then he has to have the other wrist done after that. Mom has her health issues as well. At least they weren't physically hurt during all this. It's not even the middle of December and already I can't wait for winter to be over so there's no more ice, hail, etc.
