Okay, someone really needs to help me here, I feel like I'm missing some fundamental common knowledge of the universe or something. Suddenly, everyone I talk to is on an Apple binge and can't stop raving about how the Mac platform and the iPod/iPhone are the greatest things to grace commercial stock and I just don't get it. I'm trying guys, really

Man, even that seems like a bit of a stretch to me though. I run Vista now and ran ME for years and never had any problems. Ironically, the one virus I ever got (courtesy a friend's reference to an FTP server of his that happened to be infected) was on XP, which has been hailed as the "perfect" Windows OS for some goofy reason (well, not goofy, it simply has been around longer and therefore has nearly all its holes plugged).

There's also this "ZOMG SO-AND-SO COPIED SUCH-AND-SUCH FROM SO-AND-SO AAAWWWW" when the fact is both Apple and Microsoft have been lifting ideas from one another for years. That perplexes the shit out of me.

The only major difference I see is in the nature of each system's function of security. PC's are vulnerable to passive attacks if the end user is retarded and doesn't wear a cyber condom (with all the free and highly effective anti-virus/malware and such out there nobody should be getting shanked by a virus). Macs, on the other hand, are largely free of passive attacks, but thanks to their Unix base, are easy as hell to corrupt via direct attack. It's a weird dichotomy. Windows is a neighborhood where you just have to be weary of which streets you go down cause some neighborhoods are bad news, whereas OSX is like some suburban paradise you never need to worry about, but who's to say when your neighbor is going to bash down your door with a knife and no one notices when you scream.
