Okay, so since my last post (which was apparently only 2 or 3 days ago, sheesh) I've been watching like a man possessed or something, and I've decided to truncate my critiques.
Melody of Oblivion: 6/10. Surreal, like Utena, though not as much so. A lot about dudes which are also motorcycles, and the girls who love them.
Shikabane Hime Aka (First season, haven't watched "Kuro" yet): 8/10. I kept worrying it would slip into old Shonen tropes, but it never did. A series about walking corpses and the psychology of the secret society responsible for them, no wonder Gainax wanted to help make it.
He is My Master: 7/10. Hilarious, perverted, and somehow adorable. I'm quite sure that someone could easily take offense at the treatment of women in the series, but a the same time it managed to stay just on this side of "decent".
And for fun, I'll post my X/10 critiques of the other series I've watched. Cause it's fun to be brief.
Gunbuster: 7/10. It's like Gainax said "Hey, what would be better than giant robots? Teenage girls in swimsuits piloting giant robots, with a detailed understanding of special relativity. And explosions.
Nadia: 6/10. It has its moments, but it's a little too long, and all the fun psychological stuff will get covered in much greater depth in...
Evangelion: 10/10. Beautifully $@#%ed up poetry on the nature of heroism, growing up, living, changing, and growing.
Kare Kano: 7/10. It was really close to dropping down to a 6, but the good parts are better than the bad parts are bad. If it had only been the first 16 episodes, it would've been better, I think.
FLCL: 10/10. Easy to mistake for just being weird, but if you understand that it's really about growing up, told in different language, it's a beautiful story of a child getting older.
Mahoromatic: 8/10. Robot maids, lots of breasts, and a whole lot of thoughtful and cute romantic interplay and character development.
Abenobashi: 7/10. A weird, thoughtful commentary on growing up. Somewhat a reprise of FLCL.
Diebuster: 9/10. There's something to be said for a series that makes its prequel better. Also, Nono is awesome.
Gurren Lagann: 10/10. If you watch one anime series, ever, make it this one. It has every trope you've heard of, in addition to being hilarious, over the top, and brilliant.
