So now that I've canceled WoW (temporarily I think) I have been looking at Free to Play games.  Most of them are pretty grindy and of course have Item Shops where you give the company real money for in game goods.  They can range from just cosmetic changes to really game breaking stuff depending on the game.

First one I tried is Luminary.

It was recommended by a blogger who's site I frequent so thanks to Tobold for the chance to check out this game.

First of all there are only four characters to choose from.  Each one is supposedly good at a certain type of weapon but I barely checked the wiki since I don't care about optimization just yet.

This game is quest based and the basic idea is the government in the world is player driven.  A leader of a town is called a GoonZu and your mission if you choose to accept it  is to become GoonZu.  Of couse you don't have to play politics if you don't want and you can become a hunter, gatherer or Artisan and make the items in game that people will buy.  All armor and weapons are player created.  You can find or make books that will teach you certain skills and you gain a skill point for every level that you can use to learn weapon skills, spells, horse training, and so on.  There's a lot more to it than that, but your starteer quests will explain everything that I didn't.

My first impressions are a mixed bag really.  The Item Shop is not open for Luminary yet and I'm poor at the moment anyway so I'm not sure what they'll have in there.  I hate that the starter bag they gave me as a quest reward broke and there's no way to get another one just yet.  Also you do get a mount at level 15 from a quest, but horses die.  Or at least this one did.  So there's a good chunk of my inventory that I don't have access to unless I get a new bag and a new mount.

One thing I do like is that once you reach the right skill level, there's a feature in game that will give you information on mobs, crafted items, and locations without having to alt-tab to another site.  That's ingeneous and perfect for people like me who like to do a bunch of research on mob drops and such.

Another nice thing is when you start, the game sets you up with a mentor who can help you until you are level 50 (there are 100 levels in this game).  If you have a good mentor you can get all sorts of hints and tips from them and they get incentives for helping you.  At this time I don't have good mentors, and you only get a small pool to choose from but hopefully things will improve when the game is no longer in beta.

The graphics are 2D and the monster sprites have that generic cute Korean MMO feel to them.  I like 2D so that doesn't bother me.

I recommend Luminary if you just want a break from your usual MMO.  The crafting is not bad and the mechanics are a bit clunky but manageable.  It's not available for Mac unfortunately.

If any of you decide to give it a try tell them that Rosabelle recommended you.  :p

I think I'll try perfect world next.
