Click to viewI love this show. I do think the series is starting to "break down" so I do think it's fitting that it doesn't go past one more final season. I will be setting my clock to this show's episodic releases week to week.
It is gritty. It is graphic. It is very Latino and very Masculine. But it also has heart and emotion and shows what a masculine heart looks like in a twisted reality - trying to find serenity in a brutal world - breaking the world in the process.
That I warmed up to this brutal series says something about me. But it also conversely testifies to some Aztec gold hidden in the folds of the series. Something deep. Grappling with the nature of reality is a subtext of this series. And there are some genius story points that remind me in some ways of Mr. Robot.
For some reason I couldn't get into SOA (the parent series of this one), but for some reason this one stuck.
Side note - but I never would have happened upon this series, if it weren't for COVID/quarantine... It was during my 2nd day of quarantine after my diagnosis in March 2021 that I crept out of my bedroom to the TV (once everyone had left the house) and gingerly grasped the sanitized remote.
When I pulled up Hulu and saw "Mayans" I assumed it was a documentary, and clicked on it. The rest is History. Brutal, gently wafting HISTORY.
