Personal notes: I study several months in advance of the test. I start studying 4 or 5 months in advance, and really study hard the final month preceding the test. I've used practice tests, workbooks, and internet guides, but I can definitely say that these books are the most useful study-tool for a study-by-yourself student. It's much easier to navigate than a wide variety of blogs or online sites, and you can take it with you to the library or a cafe easily.
All my books are half-off. I used them all gently, and wrote in pencil. Minimal wear-and-tear can be expected, but they're in pretty good shape. The weight in grams is provided for you to calculate your own shipping: please use the link to Japan Post's online shipping calculator: (

Asking Price: ¥600 + shipping
176 pages
B5 edition (April 12, 2010)
Language: English
Product Dimensions: 10.1 x 7.2 x 0.6 inches
Weight: 500g
CONDITION notes: There's a pinky-sized stain on the outside pages/rim/(the part that is flipped) (see the photos), and there are five headings that I added some ふりがな / ルビ in a few headings. However, it's not in the quiz section; it's in the introduction section. It's not on every page; about five or six headings of the book. (Sorry; I thought it was erasable pen, but alas. It's not. Anyway, it shouldn't bother you.)
Notes: For preparing for the kanji section (only. Tho some vocab may overlap) This book is really unique. The kanji are not aligned in stroke order or loosely related lists; the lists are kept pretty short. One two-page-spread is intended to be studied in a day, and half of the spread is a practice kanji quiz. It's easy to use as a spring-board to other drills (flashcards, or practicing writing in a notebook), and a good reference book because of the themed "days." Each day has a 日常 everyday lesson aspect, so you can pick it up and learn about the kanji you see all around you. :) As a person with little interest in kanji (I have to force myself to study), this everyday aspect is why I continued with this series.

JLPT Practice Test:
Asking Price: 800yen. + shipping SOLD
220 pages
Publisher: アスク; 初 edition (May 25, 2010)
Product Dimensions: 10.1 x 7.2 x 0.8 inches
Weight: 550g
Condition Notes: there might be small pencil marks or post-it-notes that I missed, but otherwise very gently used.
Notes: practice tests are incredibly important. You can practice with a timer and feel that "OMG"-ness as the timer runs out. You can get used to the style of questions. You can also read the explanations of questions you didn't get right (available in several languages.) Highly recommended because it's very well put together, modeled directly off the new tests, and so a good diagnosis for you before the test.

255 pages | Asking Price: ¥900 + shipping SOLD
(February 10, 2011)
Product Dimensions: 10.1 x 7.2 x 1 inches
Weight: 800g
Condition Notes: The red-sheet advertised on the front has gone missing...I can get you one from the hundred-yen-shop if you ask for an additional 100-yen. :)
Comments on the book: The practice questions are very useful. The explanation and the pictures is rather memorable, too; it makes studying a lot less dull. There's a lot of languages and explanations that are pretty nice as well. The 試験直前チェック is excellent for calming your nerves before the test, and that all the answers are right on the page in red is convenient if you're studying on the train or on-the-go. None of that "find the answer book" stuff.

Vol.2 N2
Asking Price: ¥800 + shipping SOLD
Product Dimensions: 10.2 x 7.2 x 0.6 inches
Weight: 600g
Notes You do not need to have purchased Vol.1 to make use of this book. It simply means that the two published "practice tests" differ from each other, not any sequential significance.
Comments: So! Practice tests are essential for me. Knowing what kind of question, knowing the type of answers, and knowing how long it takes you to do each section is very useful if you want to "train" up to a good score.

Asking Price: ¥900 + shipping SOLD
280 pages
(March 11, 2011)
Language: 日本語
Product Dimensions: 10.2 x 7.2 x 1.1 inches
Weight: 800g
Conditions notes: the red-sheet advertised on the front cover has gone missing...if you'd like one, I can buy you one for an additional ¥100. With the red sheet, you can't see the red text underneath, so you can easily "self quiz" yourself and get immediate feedback. None of this "where'd that answer book go?", which is useful if you study on the train or on-the-go. I have used a pencil to make some notes in some areas. Will erase as much as I notice.
Comments: this company uses charming pictures and red ink to make your studying time a little less monotonous. The sample reading quizzes are designed to be done in short succession, so it's easy to put down and pick up again, unlike the practice text books. The explanation and layout is also pretty good.
