Hey all, I'm fine here in NOLA. We weathered the storm and are now back at our house; obviously we have power. The house was fine. The avocado tree in the back came down without damaging anything, and the vent for our hot water heater was thrown off kilter, but that was pretty much it. I was most relieved that no trees in the side yard came down on my VW and a friend's van we are storing for the summer.
Truthfully, I did not think the storm was much worse than a tropical storm. I sat outside on Sheri's porch for most of it and read an autobiography of Liz Renay. It was much cooler than staying in the boarded-up house. It stayed fairly breezy and tolerable afterwards, and we had a generator for running a fan across the bed while we were sleeping.
After getting twitter reports about the evac/contraflow mess, I am glad I stayed put. I just had a gut feeling that kept telling me "get home and stay home!"
There were police and National Guard everywhere before and immediately after the storm. We stopped by another neighbor's house to get ice- they work at a club and have access to massive ice machines.
There's plenty of work to be done unpacking our crap- I had mostly cleaned out my fridge before the storm, and came back the day after to retrieve more stuff, so I gave it a good cleaning before re-loading it last night with what we have left.
There's plenty to do around here in any case, unloading supplies and cleaning and re-organizing the house, and later checking to see what is open, so I better get to it.
Hope you all are well.
