Render your metal horns unto me.

I am awesome. I am more awesome than you.

I don't care what you were doing Tuesday night, I was in Asheville listening to and getting hugged by and sharing a sundae at IHOP with Philip Zimbardo, quite possibly the most renowned psychologist currently living. There is nothing more awesome than this.

You can tell I'm just the happiest little girl in the world right here. Zimbardo is an amazingly affectionate individual, he took a ton of pictures hugging people or shaking hands and he'll just get into conversation at the drop of a hat. Also is rather hard to photograph spontaneously because he's a very dynamic individual and moves a lot.

Also a good sense of humor. He started his lecture on time perception which I may have nodded off during for a few minutes SHUT UP IT WAS A LONG DRIVE FROM KNOXVILLE OKAY by lipsyncing to a song off his playlist (which includes Frank Sinatra and Madonna).

Zimbardo vs. Zimbardo.

Post-talk and post taking about fifty pictures and shaking hands with students, he discusses...something with Dr. Weber and Gary.

It snowed about three or four inches the day after I came up, so they canceled classes for the day. All the better for me to hang with Price and Gary!

And ally with Crispy in snowball fights while they drove around in circles with the golf cart. Gary's building manager to the student union and one of the managers in the caretaking and transportion of Zimbardo so he gets to do that sort of thing.

More snow shenanigans while we waited around for Dr. Zimbardo's main talk on The Lucifer Effect. Price and I arrived an hour early and managed to snag some good seats in the middle rows.

This was behind us at about half an hour before the talk.

And this is all the extraneous people getting kicked out into the lobby, and you're not seeing the additional hundred or so watching the telecast down in Robinson Auditorium elsewhere on campus. And this is still with about three inches of melting snow.

Him talking. I told you he was hard to photograph.

I snapped a few quick pictures of slides that particularly amused me, but there was something like 150 of them and a couple of video clips. It was basically on what drives good people to do evil things, and on the flip side what can make people do heroic things and how to promote the latter in society. The talk went for about two hours and you bet your bum that I did not fall asleep during this one. They filmed it, but I'm not sure where to find it or I'd link it here. At the end he gave us a link to a trailer of Zimbardo: The Movie which is...just watch. Seriously.

After the talk he signed books. A lot of books. Mine says "Be my hero!". <3

I guess he didn't recognize me, because when I came through the line again I got another picture. This time, a manly handshake!

A supplicant, stricken with awe, falls to his knees before the greatness of Zimbardo.

Gary demonstrates his "Z Team" badge. There were a bunch of them with black and red balloons and everything.

See? Balloons.

Two or three times we thought he was done and then a few more people would somehow magically appear to get their books signed, so Gary and Fritz went all honor guard to protect Zimbardo from having to sign any more books. I think his hand was starting to cramp up. It was also at this point, since we'd been humming it for a while, that Gary made mention of "Everyone's a Hero in Their Own Way" from Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog to Dr. Zimbardo for future use in future hero-related talks.

The Z Team! Like the A Team but cooler. They look a bit demonic, but then Dr. Z pretty much looks like a supervillain so it makes sense he'd have minions.

After most everyone had cleared out and things got packed up, Dr. Zimbardo was hungry. He'd pretty much been on the go since 9am and he'd been on his feet for quite a long time. After much rumination over what would actually be open at about eleven o'clock at night they decided upon IHOP, and he offhandedly invited along anyone who wanted to go. Besides him, Dr. Weber (former graduate student and dear friend of his, I deeply regret that I never got to take a psych class off her because everyone says she's pretty cool) and her husband, us three were the only ones who showed up.

So here I am eating crepes next to Dr. Zimbardo. Oh yeah.

Price and Gary across from us, with Price making sure Gary didn't eat anything too sugary. We're his nag police, and since it worked so well on getting him to quit smoking (six weeks!) Price seems to figure it should work on his blood sugar levels too.

Then for dessert Dr. Zimbardo orders a sundae.

Okay, this one was all him. It's up on Facebook too, Philip Zimbardo menaces the sundae.

Of course it was a big sundae, so we had to help him finish it off. Very tasty, even if my stomach sort of regretted it afterwards. He's a fun guy to hang out with, although by this point I think we were all starting to get pretty tired. It was still absolutely amazing, though, I was all jittery and excited for an hour afterwards. Although that might have also been the coffee.

And to end on the note of Lucifer, you can apparently pick him up for a pretty good price on the road between Asheville and Knoxville.

squee, mental health, school, zimbardo, awesome, psychology
