In Indonesian, one of the traditional form of feminine name is to add '-wati' to it. Like, Tinawati. Tina in itself is a feminine name, I dunno, maybe they added -wati to make it sounds more Indonesian or something. To put simply, it's a common suffix for a girl's name. The following was a conversation that happened while my friends and I were having lunch... for some reason, we started talking about names.
M: But I did read somewhere on the newspaper, quite a long time ago, about a robbery victim in Jakarta. Guess who her name was.
Me: ?
M: Agatha Christie.
L: Whoa, her parents must had been a fan.
Me: Impressive.
L: But that's nothing compared to my friend's friend.
Me: Yea? What's her name?
L: Vaginawati.
.............I truly wonder whether her parents gave her that name knowingly.....
Speaking about phone calls, the phone call I got just now rather made me speechless. Was expecting a call from an aunt, so when the phone rang I immediately thought it was her (I seldom get phone calls).
Female voice: Hi, love!
Me: ...ha?
My immediate thought was that it was a stranger, since no Indonesian uses that to start a phone conversation. Australians maybe, but not Indonesian. And so far... err... I don't think any Australians ever called me, no.
.....turned out it was dear friend, in one of her love-struck mood. That was... unexpected.
Speaking of, I just got a new housemate. This one seems better than the previous one, in terms of sensibility. In terms of politeness, too, I'd give him 8.5/10 (Alien forces seem determined that I shouldn't get a female housemate, I wonder why).
