Spent some time reading scanlations of Death Note, which was illustrated by the very same artist who did Hikaru no Go. And all I can say is... woah o_O I need more chapters >_> Need. More. And the storyline's just getting twistier... need more >_>
The story goes like... a boy found a Death Note which originally belonged to a God of Death. Any person whose name was written down in that book would die, and the writer could even specify what time and what cause of death. The boy was first terrified by this... then decided that he could use the book for a wonderful deed. He wanted to create an utopia where only the righteous lived, and he would be their god. That is, he then started killing criminals he saw on TV or Internet. After all, all he needed was their photo and name. But 50+ criminal deaths (or was it 100+?) in such a short time would of course be suspicious, and the whole world, FBI alike, started to suspect and in the end, hunt him. And commanding them was a man called 'L', whose name and face was never seen. And so began a hunt between L and the boy, both taking the role of hunters...
The book is superb *__* No boring chapter whatsoever... throughout the whole chapters I read, it was essentially a duel of wit and genius between the two characters. Both analysed what the other would do, and planned counter-attacks which then stretched to extended counter-attack plans to counter the counter-attack. Sounds confusing, but exhilarating. Both are genius, and eeriely, both believed themself to be the righteous one. And both believed that "Justice will prevail."
And the God of Death? He purposefully dropped the Death Note to human world, because he was bored (God of Deaths don't have much to do). He was amazed that the boy killed more in 5 days than he did in several hundred years. And his words to the boy; "You're already a fine Shinigami."
I need more of this manga *__* It's just getting twistier with the appearance of another possessor of Death Note....
On the other hand, I also just read Neil Gaiman's
A Study in Emerald. The ending was delightful, since it left the readers to ponder about things... and I didn't see that ending coming.
[Edit] A bit more searching, I even found a
Death Note Live Journal community. From what I gathered, Death Note is a fairly new series, and yet it's already gaining popularity (judging by the amount of doujinshi for this fandom). For those probably concerned, it seems that they're all mostly yaoi in nature... I can kind of understand, since the two main characters do have a bit of chemistry... what makes it hard for me to imagine is that it's the kind of chemistry that doesn't exactly complement each other. It's like trying to clash two suns .__. The main character, Raito Yagami (or as the spelling in the book indicated, Light Yagami) is very good looking, although 'L' is rather questionable.... taking those points aside, if you can get this manga, get it :) Unless you're an over-imaginative yaoi fangirl, you won't see anything of the likes... I didn't see any >_>
