The Meditation Gardens (Open Post is Open!)

If Spock had been prone to think of such things in such terms, he would have thought it funny (if he had been willing to acknowledge such a human thing as humor) that a place so unlike his native Vulcan would most remind him of it. The meditation gardens were lush, greenery in abundance organized along classic Vulcan aesthetic principles of order, ( Read more... )

Meditation. It was such an odd happenstance. For somebody like Chekov who’s mind was a constant swarm of buzzing honey bees flitting from one idea to the next the prospect of sitting and being calm was a difficult one. Also she fidgeted something rotten. Which wasn’t helpful, whatsoever.

She took a quick glance around the meditation gardens. They sure seemed peaceful enough, but still it was not enough to quench the overactive fluttering of her thoughts. Soon enough she came across a small stream and spotted a familiar Vulcan near it. “Commander Spock?”

It had been some time since he had spoken with the young Pasha Chekov. Spock rose to his feet and gave the customary greeting. "Live long and prosper, Chekov. It is well to see you."

Pasha inclined her head and replied "Peace and long life, Commander. It is pleasant to see you also." Starfleet had been very insistent that everyone right down to the lowliest Ensign properly represent them and that included minding their manners.

He was accustomed to his own shipmates - it was fascinating to watch humans interact with other Vulcans.

"I admit I am surprised to witness your presence in a place of this purpose." Chekov was... particularly energetic and seemed disinclined toward quiet contemplation. "Do you find it interesting?"

"Yes, I suppose I do in a vay." Pasha replied, tilting her head slightly in a gesture of thought. "I can not confess to being much of a deep thinker." She preferred to live in the here and now, a fact that made her an excellent navigator and tactical officer. "Howewer, I hawe had plenty to think of as of late and I thought the calming atmosphere might be good for calming my mind."

There was something professorial about his tone, even as he seated himself again on the grass and gestured for Pasha to join him. "Have you attempted meditation before?"

Pasha sat down on the grass, folding her hands in her lap. "I hawe attempted it, howewer I vas unsuccessful, I got distracted by something." Something that happened all to regularly for the young woman's tastes.

Spock's human mother Amanda had been the one to notice, the one to find it completely normal and acceptable: as a child Spock had been something of a distracted dreamer. His father had responded by teaching him more rigorous meditation techniques.

"Your mind is quite active; it is natural, particularly for a human of your age. Though it would be logical to seek and maintain a greater degree of discipline, reality suggests it has not harmed you to be so unrestrained."

Pasha nodded to show that she comprehended and understood what he was saying. It was something her mother and teachers had always commented on, that even for a person of her age her mind was increasingly overactive. Sometimes the girl found it hard to sleep at night due to not being able to quiet her thoughts. "Sometimes," Pasha noted "It just feels as if it is too full of vorries and information I know I vill need to know at somepoint but I do not know vhen and that adds to my list of vorries."

"Ah." That was a different matter. "The management of anxiety can be greatly eased by the practice of meditation. It is also a valuable mechanism for... storing one's thoughts in an easily accessible manner. Do you desire instruction?"

He had never taught a human how to meditate.

Pasha was somewhat taken aback at his offer, but pleasantly so. "That vould be most helpful to me if it vas not bothersome to yourself, Commander." She replied. In truth she had never really considered meditation properly apart from the occasional failed attempt at it.

"I am not so occupied that it would be an undue hardship to offer some initial instruction that might prove beneficial. What do you know of the practice?"

"From vhat I know, meditation is a practice vhere the user attempts to mowe beyond the 'thinking' state of mind and into the more calm relaxation or awareness. But other then the thoery behind it I am not that vell informed." She noted.
