Private Message to James Kirk, third alternate (gold_ambition)

It has come to my attention that there is another James Kirk on board this Enterprise: you. A fascinating notion, this concept of doubling and redoubling.

In an effort to understand the overlap of universes, I would like to speak with you on the subject. Are you available?

Spock.

The fucking observation lounge. What was it about Spocks? James knew he had to be careful. Extra careful. This Spock had met him. But again, there did not seem to be an unsuspicious way to avoid meeting altogether, and he may as well get it over with.

Perhaps, if Spock did not touch him, he would never know. After all, he'd been angry those few hours, hardly himself, making demands and offers in turn to see if one would stick. He was in much better control, here and now.

Spock did not have to suspect a thing.

She was, of course, precisely on time.

Spock sat at a table in the corner, out of the way of the humans coming and going but with a good view of the stars. She was... fond of them.

It also gave her a good view of the door, to watch for this latest iteration of her Jim.

James was not late, per se, but he was not as early as Spock. Though he was entirely unaware of that fact at first, when the only person visible in the lounge was a statuesque woman of interesting proportions seated with a view of the stars and the door. Her ears were hidden, but there was something familiarily impassive about the woman's expression.

Still. James looked around, waiting.

He did not recognize her. But Spock knew him. There was something quite familiar that she could not immediately recall - she would meditate upon it if required. It had the ring of importance.

Spock stood.

The impressive woman stood, and now James saw something distinctly Vulcan in her face and her bearing. Still. One did not immediately fly to the conclusion that strange Vulcan women were somehow Spock.

Yet another Spock had stood him up.

Though she was looking at him with a certain sort of cool recognition, and he took another look, puzzled.

"James Kirk. I am Spock."

She raised her hand in the traditional greeting.

"Live long and propser."

James blinked. And stood there. His reaction was not quite as extreme as certain other Jims might have offered--it didn't do to appear startled or weak--but he had clearly not been expecting this.

"Spock," he said finally, nodding. "It's a pleasure."

Spock had spent her years with Jim studying him, his face, his movements. Jim was not well-practiced at deception, though he could perpetuate it in the short term. This one had the same physical stance as Jim when he wished others to think he believed something and he did not.

Fascinating.

"Will you sit?"

James did so, still not sure if this was Spock--it seemed like Spock, but it was just incredibly weird.

It might be a trick.

"So... what happened?"

Her brow arched smoothly. He was, at least, like her own Jim in this straight-forward asking.

"There was a transporter malfunction. I have begun work to reverse the effect, of course."

James did not necessarily know this Spock. But he knew one of them very well, and thus far they had proven to be much alike. So the curve of this woman's brow, the tone of her voice, all played upon his instincts as "Spock."

And it wasn't as if transporter malfunctions leading to new bodies was altogether new to him.

"Of course," he said. So this was the Spock shacked up with his other self. Damn lucky man, he thought. Who would have thought? Maybe she was softer than she was as a male. "Seems strange we haven't met before," he continued casually.

"I was engaged in another location until quite recently. I messaged you shortly after learning of your arrival here."

He kept looking at her breasts.

"Has your experience here been satisfactory?"

They were more or less unavoidable.

"Inasmuch as I'm not home," he said with something like affability. "Everyone's been very pleasant." Certain Vulcans not included. "I'm sure, however, that everyone wishes to return to their universes of origin. Don't you?"

"Indeed. I have given it a great deal of thought."

The constant interruptions were not helping.

"A counterpart has made considerable progress."

Now that was actually interesting and useful.

"How close?"

That was... an unusual expression for her Jim. This James was remarkably similar and yet it was like he was wearing a mask.

"You are remarkably similar to my mate. Yet you are an unknown. I find it wiser not to share the specifics of that information at this time."
