He knew he was bothering Spock. No, not bothering, but that this emotions were having an effect. This was true in any relationship, but far more potent when they could actually be transmitted. Jim entered the cabin a few minutes after Spock, locating him instantly and approaching. Unconscious of the gesture, he reached out his hand; he was already seeking the touch of Spock's hand for comfort.
"I'm afraid I don't have the hang of this yet," he said, his voice conveying his frustration. The statement might have been made about any one of a number of issues. "I should learn to protect you from... the full brunt of things in my mind."
Spock rose, met Jim with outstretched fingers. He thought of his father calling his mother to attend before gently touching fingers in the restrained public fashion that was acceptable to Vulcan society. But, inside the walls of their home, the fingers of his father had lingered in his mother's hand. Gentle touches that gave lie to Sarek's claim the marriage had been based entirely on logic.
"Taluhk nash-veh. No matter the state of your mind. You will learn."
He appreciated the calming effect of Spock's touch, curious considering the opposite effect it could have. He smiled a little ruefully, recognizing the import if not the exact meaning of the Vulcan words.
"That's good," he said. "Considering who I am."
Jim sighed, and ran his other hand through his hair.
"I have this feeling I'm being incredibly stupid, and just can't figure out how."
"Who you are? You are my Jim. My t'hy'la and my captain."
Would he always be pulling this man after him? Spock tugged him back over to the chairs and sat, leaving Jim the choice of sharing or sitting in one of this own.
