First off this rant is NOT for kids. Explicit LANGUAGE here!
Sorry just wanted to hopefully avoid kids seeing this. Anyway this rant is to sort out the stupid fucking CUNTS(channels Diana Cage here) who think that Digital Downloading taking over physical media is an inevitability. I launch into two sides, why it's bullshit to begin with. Two, even if it wasn't bullshit, why it wouldn't even be remotely tolerable.
Let's address the bullshit side first ok? iTunes downloads have taken drastically and tons of people are putting MP3's on their iPod's. Do we see cd's being yanked out of stores? No they seem to be as prevalent as they were before. I don't seem to have any issue finding cd's around in any store.
Now secondly, even if it looked like digital distribution seemed to be the future let's see here the issues. One, your choice of movies and now music is severely limited. After all, online your location can be tracked by IP and subsequently your access or download from a site can be blocked. One thing that's interesting to note is any music cd you buy, be it professionally pressed, see non CD-R, you'd have no problem playing on any working cd player. With this your choice of music and movies are locked down to what is considered suitable or paid for to see a region whatever version on Apples movie downloads or whatever. Oh and on DVD's I'm sure you'll argue the region coding bit but there are region free players that defeat this because the truth is people want that option. Now on a download bit this is much worse, invasive and problematic.
On an extra bit what may happen and I acknowledge what my friend says is worrisome based on being a closed, more controlled system is direct downloading from gaming consoles. I think one of the issues is the death of anthologies. Given the success of "Virtual Console Service"(VCS) on Wii, XBox Live Arcade(XBLA) and Playstation Network(PSN) on plying single old games like "Gauntlet" and others on these services it is expected that anthologies will die in the process, at least on these shores. Or rather more console based one's. To be fair at least "Gauntlet" and "Mortal Kombat 2" were the only previous anthologies and without face lifts but I suspect they were successful enough for this idea to be furthered. "Mortal Kombat 2" being a Midway game launching after "Gauntlet" leads me to this.
Now taking a point from above about regional restrictions this is already being seen with XBox Live and downloading demos. I'm not just referring to not having a console from said region but checking one's ip address as well. Now if someone has bought a console from said region they are showing deliberate intent and interest in buying product from THAT region, perhaps specific product. Some try to argue rights. My concern here is on multiple fronts. One, some of these publishers DRAG their feet on either picking up the rights, the translation, or both. "Senko no Rondo Rev. X" and Ubi Soft come to mind here. No one seemed to know about "Kengo" for GOD knows how long as well. There are other games that are between a rock and a hard place like "Idolmaster". Now getting these games and importing them to play would be no problem. With direct download this type of product is locked away to you unless you live in said region. For now it's open with physical media. Oh and as to the above demo's, add-on's might be being locked down too but I can't confirm yet.
Just something to think about here people.
