Well I figured I'd throw down some thoughts here. I think I've already made my feelings clear about second languages in the U.S. but I feel reiteration would still be good.
Teaching a second language as a main focus in the U.S. right now is cumbersome and uneccessary for a few reasons. One is that we don't have enough funding to properly teach kids English. Two if you require a mandatory second language to be taught which should it be? Also there ties in even more to two, this being people suddenly think perhaps learning English is not neccessary if their second language tends to be the one of choice, COUGHSpanishCOUGH. Wherein lies the biggest problem in second language is the financial aspect especially tying into #1 and answer me how truly efficient day to day commerce on a wide scale can be in a two language society if the U.S. were to adopt such a model. The main problem with comparing the U.S. to Europe is the spread in terms of people. You're comparing a wide range of area and small amount of people in some as compared to Europe which I'd argue areawise is more dense. Sure some countries are more rural but these countries that have well oiled bilingual functioning societies tend to be dense. Correct me if I'm wrong but Switzerland is bilingual if not multilingual in terms of s society but most people are centrally located in a few cities.
Reality: We're heading towards extinction if we carry on the way we are. Capitalism is not a bad thing in that it makes things cheaper, though not neccessarily more efficient, because of the motivation of greed. The flipside is greed, like power, almost always corrupts absolutely. I'm saying Greed is inherantly flawed and is the type of thing that will eventually destroy everything around it because of it's ravenous nature. I mean just think about it for a moment when our very wellbeing is put upon the stake of money. People soon realize there's a limit to making money on x thing if they have it function like this so if it's controllable and can be manipulated to be stable and of minimal to no harm to the individual then keep having them take their pill to keep them in health to pay you a subsidy for a disease you may have created in the first place.
WHERE, you may ask, am I going? Directly for the heart of a big issue and one that if people truly think about it, affects all Americans and that is AIDS. With AIDS I don't believe in the nonsense that it came from Africa or seom bullshit like that. Instead, I believe AIDS was created considering how well the drugs supressing it work and how perfect it is for someone to be able to spread it easily with the carrier taking about the time of Cancer if they were to die from it. One may ask then, why isn't it airbourne? Perhaps it would be too visible then. As it stands one can readily infect another with AIDS quite quietly for at least a couple of months and even then only some Hubbub will be made.
Now I lead into something frightening here. Imagine if EVERYONE were infected with AIDS. Now just imagine if Pharma stripped you of your drug for a while because you were protesting against them and had it for a while, the disease that is. Soon enough, in a few months or maybe more, you'd drop like a fly.
To jump to a similar subject I'd like to speak about Stem Cell research as an issue for two reasons. One it distracts us from Herbal cures for Cancer that might be found and used instead because Pharma can't make enough MONEY off those. Two I don't know if I trust any for profit company to go rooting around in my genepool and not fucking it up down the line to sell me a med for something they created by fucking up my genes. Is it the typical scientists in the company I have a problem with? No, it's more one's reporting to a CEO. I don't have a problem with these people making money, I have a problem with them putting humanity in danger by doing more than just correcting genes because there's no money past that which leads into them tampering with it which is just too dangerous. However they will overlook it because of the selfishness of self, never remembering even if they end up starving to death or whatever because of looking out for more than just them, they will be reincarnated, though that is just my belief.
