So I'm moving to Anaheim soon. A friend of mine from college, Conor, has been heavily implying that he wanted me to come work for him for a while, possibly because I'm the only other person he knows of that understands genetic algorithms (well, besides the professor of the class where we learned about them. There was a third student in the class; he didn't do so well. I don't know if the class was ever offered again, either). This weekend he finally got around to setting up a meeting between the owner of the company and me so that he could make me an offer.
Considering the first sentence of this entry, you can probably figure out that the offer was a pretty good one.
So yesterday I put in two weeks notice (which was a very validating experience, involving everyone saying how great it was having me work there and my boss trying to figure out whether he could offer me what amounted to a 50% raise to get me to stay); now I have 3 weeks to find a place in Anaheim and move there. This is made slightly more complicated by my insistance that I celebrate my birthday, which I will be doing on the 15th. There will be booze; there will be board games and Wii games and probably the general hanging out that is usually part of such occurances. If you read this blog, you can assume you're invited, though I understand that many of you are too far away to make it.
Emmi and I will be seeing if we can break the lease early (there's a clause in there that says we can break it if my job transfers me, but we don't know if that applies to getting entirely new jobs). She'll be sticking around Ventura until the end of the school year regardless; the plan is that she'll move in with my mother when the lease ends (whichever way it ends) and then move in with me again after her job releases her from its evil clutches.
So that's my major update; let me know if you're coming to my birthday/going away party.
