Garret hasn't been sleeping. When he closes his eyes, all he sees are corpses floating across his vision, causing waves of nausea to rise. He covers the shudder of revulsion with a swig of coffee or beer, whatever is on hand. He's aware something stronger would be a better distraction--the burn as it slides down his throat and it would do a better job of actually wiping his memory, but he gets his clearest visions during drunken blackouts, close ups of the bodies.

If it was just the other Seers he saw dying and dead, that wouldn't be so bad. Those bodies are almost cleaner, though there's more blood around them. The injuries are to their heads and chests; quick deaths. The other bodies he's seen, the mutilations, the symbols and weird lettering he sees cut into bloodless dead flesh, eyes missing from their heads--that's what gives him nightmares. He sees the lettering often, swimming in front of his eyes when he closes them. He doesn't know what they mean and he doesn't want to look them up.

Something that really scares Garret is the way the killer--because it's one person, the same person doing this, he knows it in a way he couldn't name--can switch off so easily, from killing ritualistically to the simple ending of a life, ending a life just in case they might know something about those first killings, that chills him.

So Garret isn't sleeping, instead staying up to write on his computer or look for a job.
