Tim and I had a pretty busy weekend. We left around 7am on Saturday to make the 3 hr trip down to Tombstone. Right away, I was pretty disappointed with the town. It's pretty well runned down and most of the buildings have turned into very touristy stores. I knew that the place wouldn't look the the Kurt Russell movie, but I was expecting a bit more history. I was hoping the buildings would have been preserved and turned into mini museums. I was hoping that the town was more like the living history city of Colonial Williamsburg. There were two bright spots in the town. We toured the courthouse, which was a museum, preserved by the Arizona State Parks and we toured a silver mine. The mine was cool, but our guide was clearly insane. Despite this, he did seem to know some stuff and he gave us a free rock souvenir. Nice....now if only i had 8.99 more tons of the rock, i might have enough silver to make one coin. Sweet. We also checked out Boothill graveyard, which was, well... a graveyard. It was interesting to see the inscriptions on the crosses. I took lots of pictures of people who had been killed by Apaches or murdered or lynched or even hanged by accident.
The second stop on our trip was to Kartchner Caverns, also an Arizona State Park. We took a cave tour that lasted about 1 1/2 hours and it was really awesome. The highlight was a big room which had a 59ft column (a stalagmite and a stalagtite that have met). They had a guy compose a dramatic light show in the room coordinated with music, it really highlighted the colors and shadows of the cave and it's features. We have to go back to take a second tour into a different part of the cave, where there are bats. :)
We ate dinner at a yummy place in Tucson, called Cafe Poca Cosa. Then, it was time to head home, I think we got back around 9:30pm. It was a long day, but it was definitely a lot of fun and I'm glad I went to Tombstone, despite it being dissappointing.
(I am trying to link to some pictures, but the lab computer sucks at the moment. I'll try again later.)
