Now that she was a little over two months old, Calliope was actually starting to sleep for longer periods of time which was nice. Leoben was able to drink a little less coffee, but he still fell asleep reading to her about big red dogs named Clifford or yellow birds with imaginary mammoth friends ( Read more... )

Kara's foot swung from the bed to prod at Leoben's shoulder. "What's that supposed to mean?" she asked into her pillow.

Leoben grinned as he glanced over at her. "It means you might know what sound an elephant makes. I probably should have made her a horse instead."

Kara's eyes opened to look sleepily down at them. She was too tired to make the horse bit a crack about her pregnancy, but she damn well meant to try. "Why? 'Cause horses are fat, too?"

Leoben looked puzzled and rolled his eyes which made Calliope laugh. At least she was in a good mood.

"Horses aren't usually fat though," he insisted. "They have to race around tracks and carry people. Maybe I should have made her a... Well, what sort of animals do you like, Kara?" He hadn't realized elephants and horses were such sensitive topics.

"Elephants," Kara replied. She slid off the bed and lay down next to him, resting her head on the knee unoccupied by Calliope.

Leoben gently ran a few fingers through her hair before returning most of his attention to the baby in his arms. "That's not a bad choice," he said although he didn't really think Kara was that impressed by elephants or she'd know what noises they made. "They're the largest land mammal."

"Huh." Kara didn't really care about elephants or other land mammals, but they were easier to talk about than the rest of what was going on. She turned over to face away from him, tracing patterns against his knee with her fingertips. "You seen her yet?"

"I thought about looking," Leoben admitted, as he nuzzled Calliope's cheek with the stuffed animal. It wouldn't be possible to avoid Roslin forever, but he wanted to. He would have if he didn't think he had to probably prove to Roslin he had changed. For Starbuck's sake if nothing else. "I'll try to find her soon. Maybe she'll start giving me a hard time and make her peace with you."

"I don't want her to give you a hard time," said Kara. Kara had thought about it until her head ached. "She doesn't understand, she doesn't even want to."

"It's better if it's me. She matters to you," Leoben pointed out calmly because this wasn't a new or startling revelation. Kara cared about her people and always would.

"She never wanted to understand so it's going to take a lot of time and a lot of work." And more patience than either one of them probably possessed. "She doesn't exactly like me, you know." He was pretty sure Roslin and Lee held him personally responsible for every single attack on the colonies.

"Well, you did make it sort of hard," Kara grumbled, then adopted a breathy whisper. "'Adama is a cylon.' The frak did you say that for, anyway?" she asked, whacking his knee with her palm.

"You can't swear in front of Calliope," Leoben scolded before sighing heavily. "I was going out the airlock no matter what I said." He didn't want to talk about this in front of the baby either, but she was still preoccupied with the elephant so it was all right.

"So you thought you'd get in one last dig?" If it weren't for the mess it'd landed them in now, Kara would have approved, but such as things were..."What are you going to say to her?"

"I thought I'd mess with her one last time," Leoben agreed although he was positive that was not the real reason Roslin hated him. That would have just been too bizarre. "I think I'll start with hello and then see how I feel about saying anything else."
