I have joined the world of the iPod.
I've been debating for a really long time now whether I wanted an iPod. They are so cute, but I feel so disconnected from music in general, a trend that began when I went to grad school in the sticks and with no money, and then just continued as I re-emerged into the world (I think I'm stuck somewhere in 2003, music-wise, though my brother would argue I've never left 1988 behind). I convinced myself I would never use one, I didn't have the time to rip the music into iTunes, and while I was recovering from the grad school/Very Big Publishing Company years, couldn't really justify 99-cent expenditures on music.
The iPod debate grew louder when I started my new job six months ago. I went from an office with a door to a cubicle and from a downtown office with lots of friends and activities to one out into the suburbs where I haven't made the close relationships I've had at previous jobs. I've also returned to the sport of my middle school/high school days -- running. So I thought, hmm, iPod -- make the time go by faster. But as some of you know, I'm totally indecisive and will continue to hem and haw, driving everyone around me totally nuts until someone else makes the decision -- which I go along with.
I was surprised with two iPods this year -- both of them (to quote my niece, age 2) "leettle tiny" shuffles. They are so adorable; I can't believe these tiny things replace the hulk of the Walkman that used to be surgically attached to my hip and ears (I still have it, btw -- totally great for hurricane situations). My brother gave me one in red, the boyfriend gave me one in green. Both also supplied iTunes gift cards. I am totally in music heaven and have loaded up the iPods with music from Cyndi Lauper, the Go-Gos, Bon Jovi, Journey, Carole King, and some Jimmy Buffett (I guess my brother is right -- I haven't left 1988). I went running with the iPod yesterday and it was so cool just how fast the nearly 4 miles went when you have the Go-Gos setting the beat for you.
I still haven't figured out all the ins and outs of the thing yet. The green one has been loaded up with songs from the boyfriend's computer and he'll be using that one, so that'll work out with no problems. I haven't done anything yet with the iPod my brother gave me because someone said something to me about authorizing computers and not being able to take songs from one computer to another? I don't want to buy songs or load songs from iTunes on my dad's computer and then end up losing them when I hook it up to my computer. I'm also hoping I can get the songs off the boyfriend's computer and put them on the other iPod so I can still listen (I'm pretty sure he's not so much into "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" and various Bollywood songs I bought). Technology-wise, I'm hanging out in 2004, so there's some 'splainin' to do.
