Cas/Crowley post 7.17

Cas really had no concept of the passage of time now. Logic was something that was beyond his reach with Lucifer taunting him and laying on the guilt every second of every day, but if he were able to think about his situation, he would realize that remaining here was hardly going to be the protection it was intended to be. Eventually, someone would find him, one of the demons he was here to be protected from. But what choice was there? This wasn't something he could fix, and there was nothing he could do for anyone on the outside. All he had was this. And as Lucifer delighted in telling him, he deserved this as punishment for everything that he had done.

The fact that Castiel didn't fight back was initially irksome to Lucifer, but he had known this wouldn't be like Sam, or like any of the souls he had tortured before. Unlike Sam, Castiel didn't need sleep, and unlike souls in the pit, Castiel was resigned to this. He had known what he was taking on, though it had been a shock initially, and accepted it. In a way Lucifer's constant gnawing at those things that hurt the worst was a relief. He wasn't alone with it, and unlike Dean, Lucifer would never err to the side of optimism, would never suggest that he was back for a second chance to make things right. That kind of hope hurt far worse than anything Lucifer could do to him.

Still, Lucifer found ways to delight in this torment. He was a connoisseur of torture and he had never expected this to be easy, or typical. It was subtle, but here and there he glimpsed new depths of agony in Castiel. He managed to touch on particularly vulnerable places, and he found satisfaction in the reactions he got from Castiel, the reactions he couldn't hide behind a once-stony expression.
