» APPEARANCE: Naoto is on the short side, standing at about 4'11" without her platform shoes. With them she is about 5 feet. Her overall appearance is androgynous and her frame is petite. Her face retains a boyish look yet is soft around the edges to give off a feminine feel. Her figure, when hidden underneath all her clothing, is slender. Her hair is short and blue, generally hidden under her hat. Naoto's eyes are a greyish blue. She chooses to wear male clothing. She wears the male school uniform for the most part and outside of school will wear men's shirts and ties. Her casual clothes still retain a level of formality to them. When not hidden by her clothes Naoto's figure is very obviously female, curved and shapely. She is implied in canon to be well endowed although this is not obvious because she binds her breasts to keep up her boy appearance.
The extra two years won't see a lot of obvious change. There will be a slight height increase and she'll be "fuller" in some areas. Otherwise not much of a change. It's only two years.
» PERSONALITY: Naoto is serious to a fault. Although only sixteen years old she acts like someone twice her age because she has spent her whole life around adults. One could even say Naoto doesn't know how to act like her age anymore. Having striven to be accepted by adults all her life and having worked with them as a detective, she has lost her ability to simply be a "child" and, in fact, hates the idea of being seen as one. As a result she is often shunned by those her own age. Unfortunately she is likewise shunned by the adults because she is only seen as a child to them. This puts her in a bit of an awkward position of being between both adult and child and thus she is unable to form connections with other people. She comes off as being very detached due to her serious nature and tendency to put logic first rather than feeling. Regardless she attracts a lot of both female and male admirers which she scoffs at. She dislikes affection of any kind from those who "know nothing about her". Naoto is rarely emotive and seems to wear a careful mask most of the time. That isn't to say she's completely expressionless, of course, but she tries hard (perhaps too hard) to keep all her emotions in check. She prides herself on this type of self control and becomes greatly frustrated when she loses it.
Naoto still keeps her true gender a secret (mostly out of habit) and is still struggling to accept her feminine side. She prefers to pass as a male though she will no longer deny she's female either. She no longer views her true gender as a burden or an obstacle to over come. Instead Naoto is simply embarrassed and easily flustered when it comes to "acting like a girl" because it is such a foreign concept to her. Wearing skirts or form fitting girl clothes makes her feel awkward and she usually refuses to ever wear them. Additionally she refuses to be seen in clothes that are revealing, such as bathing suites. However for the most part Naoto simply wants to be accepted as a person and a detective first, and as her gender second. Those who look only at her gender, such as the admirers she has at school, earn a very cold shoulder.
She prides herself heavily on her deductive reasoning and skills as a detective, though this often comes across as her trying to overcompensate for her other flaws. In fact Naoto is quite guilty of the sin of hubris and suffering the slightest injury to it gets her very flustered. She's very driven, obsessive and extremely arrogant. Once she starts something she will follow it through and isn't likely to just give up. She's painfully blunt, sometimes bordering on cruelty, and has been accused of having a "tin ear" for the feelings of others. Although she doesn't mean to be rude and sometimes her intentions are pure, she's a little too good at pointing out things better left unsaid. Naoto can also be pretty condescending, even to her dearest friends. Something she hates most of all is the idea of her being a burden and she is not use to having to depend on others. As a result she will often insist on doing everything on her own.
Although she has difficulty making friends, once she trusts someone enough and opens up to them they will find Naoto has an oddly shyer and more relaxed side. She'll make jokes, laugh and even smile more. But it's a rare sight since she seems to be a little ashamed of this more "childish" side to herself. She's very socially awkward overall. Being with her peers doing ordinary things tends to emphasize this and she becomes uncertain of herself. Despite being so smart, she often comes off as being very naive or dense because of her social inadequacy. (For example, not once noticing Kanji's obvious crush on her.) As a result she tends to break a lot of social taboos or misses important social cues that normal people pick up on. However Naoto is still a kind and good person overall. She's just also very complex.
