Things I am planning to nominate for a Hugo at the moment
"Mirror Workout" from Saturday Night Live for Best Dramatic Presentation, Short Form. It's a sketch in which a couple of bro-y guys do a peloton-style workout video that the audience slowly realizes is actually being broadcast from a demonic prison. But the bro-y guys don't realize, they seem to just think it's weird video shtick! It does so much with so little, honestly it's the piece of new media from this past year I've gone back to the most. I know the Hugo voters and think it's unlikely anyone else will think it worthy, but it's a haunting fantasy tale that is also hilarious, and it packs it a surprising depth
The Unraveling by Benjamin Rosenbaum for Best Novel. Incredible story of love and coming of age in a time of Far Future revolution. I didn't read a lot of new novels this year, but this one was highly anticipated and completely delivered.
"Gitl Schneiderman Learns to Live With Her In-Laws" by Rebecca Fraimow for Best Short Story. Third story in an amazing cycle of shtetl fantasies. How is it both so funny and such a punch in the feels?
