Second in my series of vids for the Hugo Finalists for Best Dramatic Presentation: Short Form. Eurovision was a very silly movie whose credentials as an SFF film are limited but significant, and I have no real objection to Seanan McGuire's successful campaign to put it on the ballot. This one premiered Saturday at VidUKon.
The remarkable thing about the movie is the way Rachel McAdams commits to her very silly role. You expect it of Will Ferrell, but McAdams is an Oscar nominee who has done very serious work! But she is completely all in on her role as Sigrit, arguably even more all in than Ferrell is (not that he's phoning it in!). That's what I think makes the movie infectiously fun, that McAdams is so compellingly innocent and joyful and absurd and you just have to follow her journey and see where her naive enthusiasm takes her.
But perhaps weirdly I tried to make a vid that is sort of about how there really is no journey. The movie both starts and ends with Fire Saga in an Icelandic bar in their home town playing bad music (the hilariously terrible "Ja Ja Ding Dong") that their friends and family inexplicably love, because they love their friends and family and love making music for them. And all the incidentals of fulfilling their personal dreams, all the plot strands of the movie- being on Eurovision, finding love, having adventures- are subordinated to the joy of making music for people to enjoy.
