A few days ago I had taken my sister shopping and on the way home I said to her “Sissy, I was thinking……..” and whatever else I was talking about was completely lost on her. She never heard anything after the word ‘Sissy’. I hadn’t even realized that I’d said it. I’ve called her Elaine (dur) and sis, but not Sissy. Sissy was my special name for her that I’d called her since we were girls, and I hadn’t said that name since our huge blow-out a few years ago. There was a time when I thought I’d never say it again. And even when I began to call her ‘sis’ it wasn’t so much a term of endearment as a title or a name. So when I said ‘Sissy’ she turned to me and said “you called me Sissy, you called me Sissy!” (not so much said it as squealed it) I looked at her and said ‘did I?’ laughing at her. You’d thought I’d given her the keys to the castle. She told me that she didn’t think she’d ever hear that name again, and she didn’t realize how much she missed the sound of it; how important it was to her that I said it at least once more before ….. And she trailed off. I laughed and said Sissy, Sissy, Sissy.
Then I told her that there was a time when I honestly didn’t think I’d ever utter that name again. I too was surprised to find out that even though we’d gone through some unbelievable events in our lives, and we’d both suffered damage, here we were on the other side; relatively intact. And I though I was quite shocked to find myself uttering these words, I felt that not only had I found my sister again, but I recovered my friend, my Sissy.
Today I spent the afternoon with baby Max and his mommy Mary. He is wonderful and fat and giggly and smiling and learning to roll over. I told him today that if he didn’t roll over for me I was gonna poke him with a stick. lol. I don’t think he believed me. We tried and tried to get him to do it, but of course, noooooooo. So we gave up and just played with him. He’s great for just giggling. Then I fed him, and held him while we watched some tv. He spit up a bit, then after about 15 minutes he spit up some more and that was enough to go ahead and change him. I laid him down, took his clothes off him and he said ‘freedom and -- roll-over!!’ Mary and I started hooting and clapping, I rolled him back and he repeated the roll-over! I told Mary to grab the camera so we could video it and he said “no pictures - no pictures” lol. He was done. Nothing. Goober. So I got him dressed and we all took our places back in front of the tv. He is such a heart breaker. With his grandmother’s red hair starting to come in. Oh heavens.
It’s been a good couple of days. We even got snow tonight, none stuck to the roads, but it was beautiful coming down and it’s still on the lawn. And I have nowhere to go tomorrow. Home made potato soup is sounding good right about now……..
