Today has been thoroughly gray, blustery, and gloomy. Definitely not the kind of day that calls you to hang out in the yard and listen to the birdies sing. More like the kind of day that suggests you climb under that nice afghan your friend crocheted for you as a house-warming present and read a good book or watch a few old Dr. Who episodes. (I did manage to watch one early this morning, before MyJeff crawled out of bed.)
Then we watched a couple of television programs marking the almost-50th Anniversary of JFK's assasination. Was reminded of details I'd forgotten over the years and learned some new insights and perspectives on the affects of JFK's death on America and Americans. The actual anniversary will be this coming Friday.
One of the points discussed was that our Greatest Generation--of which Kennedy was a member--began to stop thinking of themselves as young and vital. That was when they began to consider themselves the "Old Guard". One interesting story involved a columnist named Mary McGrory who said to Daniel Moynihan, "We'll never laugh again." But he told her, "We'll laugh again. It's just that we'll never be young again." Very interesting programs. Very sad and sobering.
But I also called Mom, played some online games, chatted with MyJeff, worked with him to clear part of the garage clutter, and relaxed with some other small activities. Right now MyJeff has Puzzle Pirates going and the scent of the ham in the oven is tantalizing me (and the dogs). I think it's just about time to grab that afghan and bring up another Dr. Who.
