The sun was hot, despite the frigid temperature that surrounded them. The compass had led them to the frozen mountains outside of Aydindril. It appeared to be another false lead.
Kahlan pulled her cloak closer to her neck and shivered as the wind picked up. She looked over to Richard who was clearing a pile of snow away from a monument they'd found. He'd been staring at it for hours now. The letters on the stone were etched in the ancient tongue of the Book of Counted Shadows. She'd been helping him until he noticed that her lips were blue and her fingers were bright red. He'd sent her into the alcove she was standing it now to get out of the worst of it and try to warm up.
"Kahlan!" He waved for her to come back to the large piece of granite. The workmanship on it was exquisite but she hardly felt the need to stand in the cold for this long staring at it. "I think I've found something."
She rushed over to him carefully placing her feet in the snow so she didn't trip. When she reached him he was pointing out a specific sequence of letters.
"You see this?" He looked for her confirmation that she was paying attention. After her nod he continued. "It says something about a stone being in some sort of valley. This etching-"
He pointed to a complex looking symbol and Kahlan moved in closer to get a better look.
"What does it say?"
"It means Creation. I think. It's hard to directly translate anything from this language. I can read it and understand it but sometimes finding the right word to tell you what it means is hard."
Kahlan just smiled in wonder at him. He was amazing.
"You are a rare person, Richard."
"You're all red, Kahlan."
She put her hand to her cheek and felt the heat. She hissed as the contact sent a burning pain through her.
"I must have gotten sunburned. My skin is so sensitive and the light reflecting off the snow doesn't help."
"I think I've gotten everything that I need from this pillar. Lets get you out of the worst of it."
She nodded at him and took his hand as he led her down the side of the mountain. They reached the tree line and she felt immediate relief when the sun wasn't touching her cheeks any longer.
Richard pulled her to face him when they were out of the wind and in the shade of the pines. He placed hands on either side of her face and held her still while he leaned in to inspect the damage.
"Why didn't you say anything?" He was worried that he'd caused her this pain by spending too long reading the monument. His skin wasn't as fair and he was used to spending hours in the elements.
"I didn't even feel it until you mentioned it. I think the bitter cold of my fingers was distracting me." She tried to use a smile to assuage his worry but the turn of her cheeks hurt and she winced.
He leaned in and kissed her reddened skin. The coolness of his lips soothed some of the burn.
"That feel better?" He whispered against her face.
"Kissing my injuries better? Is that a remedy you learned from your mother?"
"She always knew best." He let his lips fall against hers. They kissed for a brief time before he pulled away. Her lips felt hotter then normal as well and upon closer inspection he saw that they too were sunburned.
He looked around and saw the crisp clean snow surrounding them. He glanced up into the trees and found what he needed. Some icicles were readily available. He snatched a small one from the nearest bough and broke off a piece and placed it between his lips. He leaned forward and began kissing her cheeks. He let the ice drag across the burned flesh.
The chill instantly soothed her face. He was kissing her better with the help of the ice. She let his mouth traverse her cheeks until the ice was gone. Then he kissed her lips again. The cold liquid that lingered there was quickly taken by her tongue as it darted out to taste the ice water. They kissed until her lips felt too hot to him then he pulled away and grabbed another small pit of icicle.
Richard worked his ice filled kisses along her face until he was satisfied that the worst of the burn had stopped.
"Feel better?" His voice was raspy with desire and he cleared his throat.
"Your mom was right." Kahlan reached for her own bit of ice and popped it into her her mouth. She then leaned forward and connected their lips again. She pushed the icicle to press against his lips and he opened and accepted it. He rolled it in his tongue before sending it back into her mouth.
They kissed until the ice was gone. Kahlan leaned her forehead against his. The fur of her hood tickled his hair line.
"Mom always was." He looked into her eyes for a moment, wishing she'd been able to meet his mother. The woman that raised him. "She'd of liked you."
"I know I'd have felt the same. No one could raise someone as wonderful as you and not be well liked." She pulled him into an embrace, hugging him tightly, before stepping back. "Can we get off this mountain now?"
He opened the compass and it was pointing south. A direction that promised much fairer weather.
"Yes. Lets get back to where it's warmer." He picked up her hand and held on tight as they navigated out of the ice and snow. He didn't want to have to use the ice remedy on any major injuries. However, he thought, using ice for other things held some merits they'd have to discuss in detail, later. Somewhere warmer. Where both of them didn't need layers of clothes.
Yes, further exploration was definitely called for.
The end.
