Reflection:
A day out of the ordinary, away from the usualness of life- something i needed! So i had a long awaited catch up with my best friend in the city. It was a beautiful day, the sun was out and the temperature seemed perfect, not too hot, not too cold. Our first stop was lunch in Hyde Park in front of the fountain. Soothing jazz music set a comforting tone, played by a busking saxaphonist nearby.
Following this we made our way toward the Mitchell Library, I wished we could have gone in, but it was a Saturday, and the enormous, elaborately carved wooden doors were sealed shut, a monument to some of the beauty that lies within.
We proceeded across the road to the entrance of the Botanic Gardens where we spent most of our day admiring nature. I hadn’t been to the gardens in such a long time. I remember visiting there in primary school and thinking how horribly boring it was, It’s amazing how ones perspective widens as they grow, and how we learn to appreciate things once overlooked. Looking around I could feel all the inspiration and overwhelming admiration that the poets we have studied throughout this literature course would have felt, creating their art and capturing nature so vividly. There were rose bushes and huge, perfect trees outstretched that I can imagine any artist’s eye would marvel at. There were also monumental statues captured in time, and green, so much green!
On entrance we saw the enormous fountain that commemorates things such as education, justice, medicine and agriculture. And to our amusement my friend and I saw two young lovers in the ‘spring’ of their lives, chasing each other in the beautiful field of green,
they seemed so carefree and happy.
Being so immersed in nature left us too feeling free, we laughed without a care in the world, and all our stress seemed adandoned at the entry gates. The day was gratifyingly pleasant, a feeling of ease and of peace passed over me. To think I’ve read of nature’s redemptive qualities so often, especially in this literature course! But to feel it is truely, powerfully amazing.
It's worth just taking a break, even for a few hours :)
