Etc, etc, etc
At the moment, as you may know, I'm taking a leetle break from things political and progressive. But I couldn't resist sharing with you the podcast I'm currently listening to, Anna and the King, about Anna Leonowens. I haven't seen "The King and I" since I was a kid, so my memories of the film are pretty vague; but obviously, Yul Brynner ain't Thai. What I didn't know was that Anna was neither white nor English, but "mixed race", the daughter of an Anglo-Indian woman and an English soldier. In fact, she pulled a magnificent con in convincing the punters in Singapore that she was a posh Englishwoman, the ideal governess for their kids! She was clearly quite an adventurer, and I look forward to reading some of her writings when I can. (The podcast is available as audio and as a transcript.)
