... have I ever explained why this journal's called
seeingred, or the tongue-in-cheek "Another Redhead Against Racism" title, or the (delightful) "Redheads Against Racism" icon (made for me by
outsdr)? I've just added a little thing about it to the userinfo:
seeingred gets its name from an
incident in 2007 in which a UK politician said racism was no worse than "gingerism", and the posting I made in response to the debate,
Why having red hair is not like being Black :-).
Do you remember that Star Trek where Captain Picard learns that an ancestor of his participated in a massacre, and feels a nagging personal responsibility to set that old crime right?* For me, the gingerism vs racism debate created a similar feeling of obligation.** By Brigid, Thor, and Set! You're appropriating my frankly magnificent hair colour to excuse racism? Have at ye! :D
* If you do, please leave a comment, 'cos I can't remember which one it was!
** Along with tremendous curiosity - I had no idea that red hair was such a big deal in the UK! In fact, it was only after I read up on it that I understood the joke in The Christmas Invasion where the Doctor asks if he's ginger.
